The Final Skate Team Report of 2004

Posted by: Mike Matz | Monday, December 27, 2004

Lauren Perkins was at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest on Friday, Dec. 17, to participate in a Holiday Festival and shoe donation for needy kids in the Orange County area; the event was also a celebration of the skatepark's one year anniversary. She skated for a few hours, signed autographs and had the opportunity to chat with kids who attended the event. Lauren's next mission will be to shoot for an upcoming etnies ad in Check It Out Girls Magazine. She also turned 16 today, so we want to wish her a very happy birthday!

Elissa Steamer is currently in Florida for the holidays, savoring a little downtime before she starts gearing up for a busy 2005. She has quite a streak of contest wins going, so look for her to continue it next year. The goal is total domination!

Have a very Happy New Year's, and look out for more skate news in 2005!

Santa Skates Too!

Posted by: Mike Matz | Tuesday, December 21, 2004

etnies distributes 500 pairs of new shoes to needy Orange County kids at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest.

Santa, Mrs. Claus, their friendly elves and Pierre André Senizergues, owner and CEO of etnies, brought holiday cheer to needy children of Orange County, Calif., last Friday, Dec. 17, by hosting a Holiday Festival complete with Christmas crafts, demos from pro skateboarders, food and more. Plus, each child received a brand-new pair of etnies shoes just in time for Christmas.

The shoe donation and Holiday Festival was in celebration of the first anniversary of the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest, which nearly 1,500 kids use each week. Pro skateboarders were on hand to greet the kids, perform demonstrations and sign autographs.

X Games 2003 gold medal winner Ryan Sheckler said, "Christmas is a time for family, friends and building good memories. I've been blessed this year and I'm happy to be a part of making someone else's holiday special." Sheckler was joined by other pros, including Lauren Perkins, Arto Saari, Rune Glifberg, Leo Romero, Matt Allen, Kerry Getz and more.

Several Orange County non-profit organizations brought their children to the event, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys and Girls Club (Westminster and Garden Grove), Human Options (a domestic violence shelter in Irvine) and Olive Crest (a foster and adoption agency in Santa Ana).

"We're excited at the success of the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest," Senizergues reflects. "I can't think of a better way to celebrate than to give youth of all ages, who may otherwise not have a happy holiday season, a chance to see Santa Claus, watch our pro skateboarders and receive a brand new pair of etnies. The skatepark is about giving back to the community—and we're doing just that with our Holiday Festival and shoe donations this year!"

With strong community input and support, etnies and the City of Lake Forest worked to create a world-class skatepark facility designed for the youth of Orange County. Using a public/private partnership to help offset the costs by more than 25 percent, etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest is currently one of the nation's largest skateparks.

Initially, Senizergues made a generous donation to the City of Lake Forest to offset costs and make the skatepark free of charge for all guests during its first year of operation, and he is currently working with the city to make this possible for yet another year.

Meet Alex, the etnies Girl of the Month

Posted by: Mike Matz | Friday, December 17, 2004
Alex
Alex with her dog, Captain Jack

Alex, the current etnies Girl of the Month, has such a big personality (in a good way) that we couldn't quite believe it when we found out she's not even 5 feet tall. (She's 4-foot-11-and-three-quarters-inches, to be exact). We happen to think she's proof that good things come in small packages. The 25-year-old resident of Costa Mesa, Calif., graduated from UCLA and now does marketing for Urban Decay and Hard Candy Cosmetics. In her free time, she surfs, skates and snowboards—that is, when she's not sewing, cooking and hanging out with her dog, Captain Jack. We chatted with Alex about running a marathon, hiking the Inca Trail in Peru and her talent for fake tap dancing.

etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Alex:
I just got a new guitar, so I'm really into that right now. Other than that, I love running, traveling and reading. I like little D.I.Y. projects and I have a sewing machine for when I'm feeling creative or just bored with my clothes.

etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Alex:
I'm really good at fake tap dancing, I do a mean moonwalk and I can sleep just about anywhere. I'm also very bendy. Does that count?

etnies Girl: How did you get involved in surfing, skating and snowboarding?
Alex:
How much time do we have? There's a separate story for how I got into each of those. I started surfing because of a 7'8" tri-fin that I fell in love with. I started skating because my classes were too far apart on campus and too close together time-wise. I started snowboarding because my friends wanted me to join the UCLA snowboarding team so we could go to Mammoth together for competitions. Snowboarding's my favorite board sport for sure. I hope I don't ever stop.

etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Alex:
I like that etnies Girl totally supports the active girl's lifestyle. It's important to be into things, especially when you're young and have way too many bad options for wasting time. It really seems like etnies Girl fosters individuality and creativity. Girls need to be able to express themselves and figure out who they really are.

etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Alex:
I just do what I want to do and I'm lucky that the things I like are good for me. I run and I ride because it's fun and feels good. Other than normal stuff like that, I guess I've done things differently than a lot of other people would have. But sometimes you get the chance to do something and you have to try it out. I graduated from UCLA with a psychology degree, but wanted to work in the music industry. I had the chance to do it so I did. It was a totally entry level, no-higher-education-required kind of job, but I took it. It made some people mad, mostly those who are still paying for my college education. I left after a year but I'm glad I did it. You just learn so much by trying things out.

etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Alex:
I spend time with my friends. It's always a good time. We listen to music, go out and eat good food. Cooking with friends is pretty fun too. I love snowboarding with my girlfriends—we totally push each other to ride better. There have been so many jumps that I never would have tried without friends just telling me to go for it.

etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Alex:
My little niece, Burrito. (Her name's actually Brie.) She's 7 years old, and inspires me to make everything fun and to appreciate little things. She's the best. It means so much to her when I make time to watch "Spongebob" or "Fairly Oddparents" with her. Sometimes it helps to remember that your time is worth a lot. Burrito reminds me that being happy everyday is what it's all about: quality of life.

etnies Girl: What's it like working for Urban Decay and Hard Candy?
Alex:
It's great. There's no dress code, I bring my dog to work with me everyday, the girls are cool and we totally hangout outside of work too. I've been learning so much. The office is all girls and it's the funnest job I've ever had. Plus, I don't get hassled for using words like "funnest." All my jobs since college have been casual, being in the music and action sports industries, but this is definitely the most laid back work environment, and I like it that way. It's cosmetics and it has everything to do with how you look, but we're about expressing yourself, being creative and wearing what you like; even if it's not what mainstream fashion is pushing. Urban Decay and Hard Candy are about girls and women finding their own style. It's nice to work for a company that stands for something, and I agree with the company's principles. It's rad. Beauty with an edge, no animal testing. What's not to like, right?

etnies Girl: What was it like running your marathon? Is that your biggest personal accomplishment so far?
Alex:
Well, people are always surprised and act super impressed when they find out I ran a marathon, so that makes it feel like a bigger accomplishment. It was a cool thing to do, and it was for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, so it felt good to do it for a cause. That actually helped make the marathon seem easier. But actually, last year I took a trip to Peru and hiked what's called the "Inca Trail" to Machu Picchu. That was a grueling camping trip and it's amazing how four days of exhaustion in the Andes can clear your head. I'm proud of that. It was hard. I'm also very proud of a scar on my left elbow that I got from eating it in the half pipe at Bear!

etnies Girl: What's the best piece of advice you've gotten?
Alex:
Oh gosh, I've gotten so much good advice. My mom told me always to be myself and be honest with everyone. I think that's gotten me through a lot. As long as I'm true to my feelings, it's really hard to come out of anything with too many regrets, whether it's a relationship or just an experience. Even when things go bad, I know it must not have been the right fit for me.

etnies Girl: What's really important to you?
Alex:
My family's really important to me. We've been through a lot and we really need to be there for each other. There have been so many times when all we had was each other. Friends and boyfriends are great, but no one is affected by my life as much as anyone in my family, and vice versa. My little sister Vic (Victoria) is super important to me. There's so much I want her to get out of life.

etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Alex:
I love Double Decker tacos at Taco Bell, Sourdough Jacks always hit the spot and my favorite ice cream flavors are pistachio and vanilla. And pork is my favorite meat.

etnies Girl’s Favorite Beauty Products

Posted by: Mike Matz | Tuesday, December 14, 2004

We think you’re lovely just as you are, but we understand that sometimes it doesn’t hurt to have a little help. That’s why we’re featuring some of our favorite beauty products that will get you looking gorgeous in no time.

Hard Candy Lunch Box

A complete makeup "meal" in a compact case, the Hard Candy Lunch Box mini makeup kit serves up a sweet selection of Hard Candy beauty treats for the eyes, lips and face. Opening the top layer of the pint-sized pack reveals six delicious lip glosses ranging from a warm peachy shade to a brick red hue, two mini lip brushes and a mirror for easy application. The second section contains an assortment of eight eye shadows, a mini black eye pencil, mini black mascara and two double-ended eye shadow applicators. The third section has everything you'll need to make your face look flawless, including two shades of cream-to-powder concealer, a powder blush, a pretty shimmer powder and, as an added bonus, yet another mini black mascara. Keeping everything in its proper place, all layers of the Lunch Box open up and lock together with ease. See for yourself how easy looking gorgeous on the go can be!

Available at Hard Candy.

Would you like to win the Lunch Box and a bunch of other great Hard Candy makeup? Go to the Contest page for details.

Kiss Me Mascara

You can kiss smudging, running, smearing, flaking and clumping goodbye when you switch from your regular old oil-based mascara to Kiss Me Mascara. As it dries, this ingenious mascara forms tiny water-resistant tubes around your lashes that stay on better than waterproof mascaras yet come off easily without the need for a makeup remover. To remove Kiss Me mascara, all you have to do is wet your lashes with warm water and gently pull: it all comes off easily in little lash-shaped tubes. (It actually makes taking off your makeup kind of fun.) As an added bonus, your lashes stay happy and healthy, since you don't have to scrub away at them to get your mascara off. Now why didn't we think of that?

Available at Sephora.

Johnson's Baby Powder

Believe it or not, Johnson's Baby Powder isn't just for the diaper set. Snowboarder Alexis Waite learned this pro beauty trick at etnies Girl's Spring 2005 photo shoot in September: When your hair is greasy but you don't have time to wash it, sprinkle pinches of baby powder onto your scalp at the roots, rub it in really well to get all the "white" out (no water needed) and soon all the excess oil will have been absorbed and your hair will have more volume. You can also use a warm blow-dryer aimed at your roots to create even more volume. Beauty supply stores sell brown baby powder for dark haired girls, but brunets can use regular baby powder as long as they apply it sparingly. (Case in point, we hear that Angelina Jolie uses Johnson's Baby Powder on her dark locks when she's in a pinch.)

Available at your local drugstore.

Fred Flare’s Candy Lip Balm Set

Sugar addicts of all ages will be in heaven with Fred Flare's set of candy flavored lip balms. The set of four delicious lip confections includes one each of Tootsie Roll, Bubble Yum, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and Hershey's Milk Chocolate. Mmm...they're almost good enough to eat. (We tried to when we were younger, so we can say from experience that it's best just to use them on your lips.)

Available at Fred Flare.

Skate Team Report

Posted by: Mike Matz | Monday, December 13, 2004

Elissa Steamer has been living out of a suitcase recently. She was in New York for a couple of weeks, spending time with her sister, skating (apparently the weather hadn't turned completely sour yet) and just living the city life (which she is used to since she moved to San Francisco). She also shot photos for a short TransWorld Skateboarding Magazine interview before she ventured down to Florida (her motherland) to spend time with some family and friends. Two weeks ago, she flew out to Hawaii for an All Girl's Skate Jam event, which essentially consisted of a weekend of doing demos and signing autographs in paradise. Since then, she has been back in San Francisco skating and golfing when the weather permits, and not doing much at all when the weather doesn't permit her to do either of the above two activities. She will be heading back to Florida on December 21 to spend the holidays with her family.

Lauren Perkins has been at home in Huntington Beach lately, looking forward to the upcoming holidays. She's been doing loads of skating and has also been getting up to the mountains for some snowboarding action. Other than that, she has been filming for an upcoming movie about the progression of women's skateboarding entitled "Rock the Bottom," and came by etnies the other day with a film crew. When not skating, snowboarding or filming, Lauren has been at the driving range working on her golf game—apparently she's pretty good! Lauren has a birthday coming up on December 27, so the day after Christmas her family will be taking her to Mammoth Mountain to celebrate on the snowy slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

This Friday, December 17, from 2 to 5:30 p.m., etnies will host a Holiday Festival and Shoe Donation at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest in celebration of the skatepark's first anniversary. Several nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping needy children in Orange County will bring children to the event, who will each receive a brand new pair of etnies shoes; all told, etnies will donate 500 pairs of shoes to needy Orange County children just in time for the holidays. There will also be a demo and autograph signing with tons of skateboarders in attendance, including Lauren Perkins, Ryan Sheckler, Arto Saari, Rune Glifberg, Justin Eldridge, Lance Mountain and more. To celebrate the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest's first anniversary, Pierre André Senizergues, the owner and CEO of etnies, will give skaters an early Christmas present by making a donation to keep the skatepark free of charge for all guests for the next year. It was Senizergues' generous donation last year that made the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest free of charge during its first year of operation.

Lauren Perkins' Girlie Skate Camp Journal

etnies Girl skate team rider Lauren Perkins and our very first etnies Girl of the Month, etnies' own Brooke Pedersen, kept this journal while they were in Barcelona, Spain, for the last Girlie Skate Camps of the year. Get the other side of the story by reading Lucy Adams' Girlie Skate Camps Diary.

FRIDAY, OCT. 1, 2004

Today was the first day of camp. The etnies Girl crew (which consisted of us—Brooke and Lauren—Luciana Ellington from Check It Out Girls Magazine and Elissa Steamer) met up with the 20 excited campers in the morning and headed to Sitges Park. We took two metros and a train, but it was worth it once we saw the beautiful ocean in the background. As soon we got to the park, Elissa and Lauren couldn't wait to jump on their boards and skate as the campers watched. The campers were divided into two groups, beginner and intermediate skaters. The beginners got practice going down a slant and the intermediates learned how to kickturn and do stalls. After getting to know the campers and giving them some pro advice, Lauren, Elissa and Luciana (camera in tow) decided to break out and skate some ledges and benches they spotted on the way to the park since the park was mostly bowls, while Brooke stayed behind to chat it up with the Nikita crew and campers. So far, the best trick of the day has been Elissa ollieing a HUGE gap, as etnies Girl UK skate team rider Lucy Adams snapped away. Lauren would like to add that the day is still young and she has every intention of getting best dance move of the day later on. Just because she was born in '88 doesn't mean she doesn't know about the worm. Once they were done skating, Lauren, Elissa and Luciana decided to get on the train back to the city and meet up with the Girlie Camps crew later on. In the meantime, Brooke and Julia "Juwels" Bauer from Nikita were busy getting lost from the group and making fun new "friends" to help them get back to the city. At first, the new friend thought that he was just being nice, but an hour of having two American chicks less than two steps behind him got a little stalkeresque.

The good news is that at the end of the day, we all got back to our hotels in one piece. After some rest and dinner, all of us camp girls went to the MACBA (Museum of Contemporary Art), one of the most famous street spots in Barcelona. The spot had good vibes with kids skating and playing soccer barefoot while campers practiced ollies. I (Lauren) recognized a ledge I saw in a skate video before and decided to do a backside 50-50 off it. When Lauren told me (Brooke) and Luciana she wanted to do it, we looked up at the six foot drop and said, "Do it." All the skaters at the park (including some hot Spanish boys) were watching and after three tries, she landed it, but we weren't sure we got the shot so she had to do it once more. On our way back, we saw some cool graffiti and took some cute pics of the etnies Girls in front of it. People don't even go out until midnight in Spain, so we met up with Elissa and a local friend and hung out in the city until late. We went on a croissant mission and Lauren polished off three, some covered in chocolate (that one was nasty and ended up in el trasho). Finally, we headed back to the hotel to sleep.

SATURDAY, OCT. 2, 2004

LESS WRITING, MORE SKATING! (And looking for cute Euro boys who hopefully wear deodorant.)

SUNDAY, OCT. 3, 2004

Lauren and Brooke here again, reporting live from our hotel lobby in Barcelona. I (Lauren) love Barcelona and am working on an etnies Girl house here. Today we finally got to sleep in. (YES!) Once we woke up, Lucy and I (Brooke) had breakfast, then came back to the room to watch "Sex and the City" in the room, while Lauren sneaked out of the hotel on a mission to feed an addiction that she's developed since we've been here to Café con Leche, a Spanish coffee drink that's half espresso and half milk. It started out innocently enough with one a day, but has since grown into a full-fledged addiction and the last couple of days she can't pass a coffee shop without running in and pounding one or two at a time. It's really fun right after because she's very hyper and tries bizarre circus-like skateboard stunts, but when she crashes from the high: LOOKOUT.

In the afternoon, we hopped on a train went back to Sitges Park for the big Girlie Camp demo. We had no idea what to expect at the demo, but to our surprise there was a big crowd of kids waiting at the park to watch the pros skate. Since Jill Viggiani was a victim of the Nikita curse (they were all injured!), she was the MC for the event. To name a few, the kids got to watch Nikita riders Mimi Knoop, Tina Neff and Juwels Bauer and our crew, Elissa, Lauren and Lucy, rip up the bowl, ledge and rail. The kids were stoked and even mobbed Elissa for autographs when she left the park to do an interview. The girls skated for about a half hour, and then hung out for awhile to do magazine interviews. Once we were done, we walked to the beach and had the best meal we've had so far. The restaurant had a huge menu with everything from Japanese to Mexican food, so everyone got what they wanted. After we ate, we went to the train station and saw a bunch of girls from the camp. It was nice to talk to the girls on the way home about where they're from (all over the globe!) and what spots they liked the best at camp. Now we're headed up to our rooms to get ready for the Girlie Camps closing party!

Xoxo from your favorite dynamic etnies Girl duo,
Lauren & Brooke
