Meet Lindsay, May’s etnies Girl of the Month
Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, May 31, 2005Lindsay, May’s etnies Girl of the Month, is fearless. The 14-year-old vowed she would never ride a motorcycle again after crashing the first time she rode one at the age of 7, but by the time she was 8 she was racing motocross. And even though she’s broken both of her legs and her collar bone, she says that she’s never scared to get back on her bike after an injury—she just hates not being able to ride for six weeks while she’s recuperating. Clearly, she’s in the right sport! Over the past six years, she’s traveled all across the U.S. to race, racking up medals along the way. We caught up with Lindsay before she left for a trip to Japan, where she was going to represent the U.S. in the FIM Women’s Cup. She lives in New Braunfels, Texas, with her parents, younger sister and four dogs.
etnies Girl: So, Lindsay, what are your interests?
Lindsay: Mostly motocross, but I also tumble.
“I love racing, I love the competition and I love the events. I’m really competitive!”
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Lindsay: Racing motocross.
etnies Girl: How did you get into motocross?
Lindsay: When my dad was younger, he rode a little bit. Then, when I was a baby, he bought my older brother and sister a motorcycle. I just watched them and when I got older decided I wanted to ride too. I had just turned 7 the first time I rode, and I crashed into a fence. I was scared and said I would never ride again. But I did about a year later, and I’ve never stopped since. I started racing when I was 8, the same year that I tried riding again.
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Lindsay: Everything! The shoes are cute and comfortable.
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Lindsay: I'm really energetic and active. I guess you could say I'm stylish, and I love to have fun and be myself.
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Lindsay: I ride, tumble and wakeboard. I love to hang out with friends and shop, too.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Lindsay: My family and friends.
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Lindsay: Being invited by the AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) for an all expenses paid trip to Japan to represent the United States at the FIM Women’s Cup.
etnies Girl: How long have you been racing?
Lindsay: I started about six years ago. I do it because its fun and I get to travel a lot.
etnies Girl: What do you like most about competing?
Lindsay: It’s fun. I love racing, I love the competition and I love the events. I’m really competitive!
etnies Girl: Do you have any advice for girls who would like to compete, but who are scared?
Lindsay: I would just say just give it a shot, don’t be scared. I guess I was scared my first race, but I don’t even remember. I was 8!
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Lindsay: If I don’t win, my dad always reminds me that there will be plenty more races that I’ll be able to do.
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Lindsay: Riding is very important, and so are all my family and friends.
etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Lindsay: Yea, thank you to all my sponsors: Texas Ski Ranch, Simpson Race Products, Kay's Motorsports, Pro Works Racing, Cycle Country of New Braunfels, Scott Goggles, EVS, Motorex and Shoei Helmets.

Short and Sweet Surf Team Report
Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, May 31, 2005Jodie Nelson and Mary Osborne just got back from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where they did an etnies shoot with photographer Jon Steele and briefly got to hang out with Otto Flores and Keith Malloy, who were also there for the photo shoot. When she got back from the trip, Jodie met up with Pat O’Connell and Rob Machado for the Jack's Corona Del Mar store opening, at which she did an autograph signing. Last Wednesday night, both Jodie and Mary were in L.A. for the Salt magazine launch party. Look for Jodie’s interview in the premiere issue, which is out now! Mary, meanwhile, has an article coming out in the July/August issue of Her Sports magazine…and, of course, the book she co-authored, “Sister Surfer: A Woman’s Guide to Surfing with Bliss and Courage,” will come out tomorrow!

Alexis Waite’s Winter X Games ‘05 Team Journal
Posted by: Sarah | Monday, May 30, 2005
- Alexis (far right) on the podium at the Roxy Chicken Jam Europe.
etnies Girl snowboarder Alexis Waite broke her face during practice at the 2005 Winter X Games and, in the process, conquered her fear. Read on for her inspirational story.
With every snowboard season comes new and demanding challenges. This year was no exception for me. The season started out amazingly well: early snow in Utah, backcountry snowmobile trips filming for Misschief Films with friends and lots of pushing my limits. I had this newfound drive and focus to RIDE all the time. It was awesome! Into January it just kept getting better, and I was getting anxious for the X Games just to hurry up and come. I was really excited for them because I was riding so well and I kept having this recurring dream where I was standing on that podium. It was weird—I don't normally dream about snowboard contests.
“I realized that when I touched my face I couldn't feel a thing.”
So there I was at end of January, riding the X Games slopestyle course and figuring out the speeds for the jumps. It was practice day and the course was complicated. The "$$$ Booter," the last and biggest jump in the course, had a crazy last minute kick on the takeoff. It was scary, but it was the finale jump right into the crowd and the judges, so it had to be done well. I wanted to get my contest run dialed in practice so, despite my inner voice telling me to be careful of this jump, I went for a backside 540, the trick I had planned for the contest. I am sure you have figured out by now that it didn't work out so well and—“Ta da!”—you guessed correctly. That kick kicked me into a completely inverted 450 and my first point of contact to the landing was my face on this 65-foot icy knuckle of the jump.
With a spinning head and throbbing face, I frantically checked to see how many teeth I had left (luckily all of them) and for blood, before using all of my willpower to pull myself up and ride to the bottom of the slope. I was out of it, but luckily ESPN’s medical staff ran to me and escorted me to first aid. I was so dizzy that I couldn't walk myself. They put me on a stretcher and my head stopped spinning so much, but then I realized that when I touched my face I couldn't feel a thing.

- Acupuncture helped bring the feeling back into Alexis’ face.
Normally, when you smack yourself the initial pain starts to subside within five minutes or so. But with this nasty, swollen shut black eye, the pain and pressure kept getting stronger as I lay on the stretcher, answering questions between sessions of dry heaving because I was so incredibly nauseous. Luckily, my friend Gretchen (Bleiler) was there, so I had a familiar face with me. Unfortunately, she too had suffered a head injury, but it was OK—she ended up winning the halfpipe two days later. Within 30 minutes of my accident, Leanne (Pelosi) and Erin (Comstock) rushed in to check on me, after hearing what had happened. By this time, I was feeling awful and I kept asking Leanne how she was so tough because she has this amazing ability always to hit her face and get black eyes but be fine. The question that kept spinning around in my fuzzy brain—"How hurt am I?!"— was finally answered when I tried to blow my running nose and I let out a scream of pure and unexpected terror. The pressure of blowing my nose felt like a knife coming through my head, and I knew I was messed up when the snot didn't come out of my nose but out of my eye socket! This was soooooo gross, and at that moment I heard the ski patrollers radioing in for an ambulance to take me to the hospital.
Finally, at the hospital, I had some oxygen tubes and the pressure in my face was becoming more bearable. You have to remember that I was in Aspen, Colo., and at about 8,000 feet, it’s really high and the air is thin. After x-rays were taken and my mom and dad had finally found me, I learned that there was a reason why my black eye hurt so bad—it was broken! I fractured both the orbital bone in my eye socket and my cheekbone, and was told I needed surgery. I then let myself cry, not from the pain because the worst was already over, but just from the frustration. I couldn't ride in the contest for sure and I needed surgery—AAAAAHHHHHH!
So yep, there I was, in Aspen, Colo., watching my friends compete in perfect conditions at the 2005 Winter X Games without me, as I waited for surgery. I was supposed to get a plate put in my eye socket and have the tissues that were falling into my sinuses pulled out. It sounded nasty. I also could barely eat or drink because all the nerve damage I had inflicted on myself. The whole right side of my face felt as if it has been injected with Novocain (even my teeth and gums). I couldn't tell if my nose was running or if I had food all over; there was no sensation at all and the doctors said there was a strong possibility that it would be permanent. Yikes! It was fun to cheer everybody on and see the X Games from a new perspective (as a spectator), but honestly it sucked! My parents and brothers all came out and they didn't even get to see me compete, which would have been their first time. I was sad.
I went home to Seattle after the event to recover and do a million follow up appointments. The good thing is that I ended up not needing surgery after all because I was naturally healing amazingly well. (I take lots of vitamins.) My next step was acupuncture and within three visits of having 20 plus needles sticking out of my face, the feeling was starting to come back. It was amazing! I forgot to mention that I also broke my wrist in this crash, but the facial injury pain overpowered the wrist pain. I found out it was broken three days later, but it was pretty minor.
I was back on my snowboard three weeks later, and straight back into the Gravity Games. I think I came in about seventh in slopestyle. I then did the U.S. Open in March, where I ended up getting best trick in the rail contest. In April, I competed in the Roxy Chicken Jam Europe in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and made podium (third in slopestyle), about which I am very pleased.
So in snowboarding seasons, like in life, there are always ups, downs, complications and triumphs, but all that matters is that you take something away from it all. I lost some feeling but I definitely found some courage, which is more important in the end. I also find that when you take bad falls and live through it, you realize that it wasn't so bad after all. It's kind of weird, but I am less afraid now that I have experienced a pretty big fear of mine: breaking my face. So I guess my dream didn't come true—I wasn't on the podium at the X Games—but I was on other podiums after that. Coming back after a tough injury makes me feel even better about those achievements. All in all, this season has been the best of my life and I wouldn't change anything!
By the way, don't forget to pick up a copy this fall of the all-girl snowboard film we have been working on all year, Misschief! Oh yeah, and if you run into me someday and my nose is dripping or I have food on my face, I probably don't know and I would really appreciate being informed—THANKS!

Lauren in SG!

Make sure to pick up the June issue of SG Magazine for an article about Lauren Perkins’ trip to Tijuana, Mexico. Lauren lost about $5,000 worth of her stuff—including a $1,000 Gucci purse—when SG’s rental van was broken into on the trip, so really it’s the least you can do…
etnies Girl Signs Snowboarder Leanne Pelosi
Posted by: Sarah | Sunday, May 29, 2005
- Leanne (center) after winning SG's Queen of the Mountain earlier this year.
etnies Girl is proud to announce the addition of top Canadian snowboarder Leanne Pelosi to its roster of pro riders. Leanne has been riding on the ThirtyTwo team for nearly three years and, after an impressive 2004-05 season, recently signed on also to represent etnies Girl head-to-toe, including shoes, apparel and accessories.
"Leanne is one of the toughest competitors in snowboarding today and has been killing it all season," says Eddie Lee, etnies Girl and ThirtyTwo snow team manager. "She is a great addition to the etnies Girl team because of her ongoing contribution to the female movement of the sport. She's always positive and committed to progressing the next generation of girls in snowboarding."
Leanne has had a stellar season, winning Transworld Snowboarding’s "Rookie of the Year" award, as well as a plethora of major rail jams, including: the Roxy Chicken Jam in Park City, Utah; Winter Gravity Games at Copper Mountain, Colo.; the U.S. Open at Stratton Mountain, Vt.; the McDonald's Rail Jam and the Ripzone Rail Jam in Whistler, British Columbia; the Vans Triple Crown in Breckenridge, Colo.; the Pipe to Pipe at Mt. Hood, Ore.; and SG Magazine's Queen of the Mountain at Mountain High, Calif. Leanne also has a featured part in "Project Misschief," a full-length all-girls video due out this fall from Misschief Films.
When not competing or filming, Leanne keeps busy as the co-founder and co-director of MGT Snowboard Camp in Western Canada, which teaches girls freestyle tricks and helps improve their skills and confidence on the mountain. She also enjoys playing soccer, running, mountain biking, surfing, designing, reading and "nerding out on the computer."
Leanne joins fellow snowboarders Alexis Waite and Janna Meyen, skateboarders Elissa Steamer and Lauren Perkins, surfers Jodie Nelson and Mary Osborne, and motocross riders Tarah Gieger and Sarah Whitmore on the etnies Girl team. In addition to etnies Girl, her sponsors include K2 Snowboards, ThirtyTwo boots, Dragon Optical, GMC, Bonfire, MGT Snowboard Camp, Lifetime and Vital Boardshop.

Posted by: Sarah | Sunday, May 29, 2005The third Wicked Wahine event, “Ode to the Baja Bowl,” will take place June 25 and 26 at the Cuatro Casas International Surf Hostel in Punta San Telmo, Mexico. The open invitational will allow female pro and amateur skaters and surfers to participate in a two day, multi-talent, jam-style contest. It will be held without the confines of a traditional skate or surf contest, instead focusing on the overall, combined talents of the women involved as they show their athletic diversity.
Wicked Wahine is excited to mix the two worlds of skateboarding and surfing at one of the premier skate and surf locations in the world. The Cuatro Casas Surf Hostel, located just two hours south of Ensenada, is the home of top-notch surfing and a one-of-kind pool designed specifically for skateboarding.
Skateboarding will be the focus on Saturday, June 25, as women of all ages and skill levels will be skating the custom-poured concrete bowl located just a stones throw from the beautiful beaches and amazing surf. The gorgeous scenery and fun-filled atmosphere will be fueled with high energy music, delicious food, live entertainment and powerful skateboarding. More than 20 of the top female skateboarders will be skating for bragging rights and more as onlookers sip cool drinks and relax in the sun while witnessing some awesome skateboarding.
Surfing is what is in order for the ladies on the morning of Sunday, June 26. The location could not be better for the first ever Wicked Wahine surf event. Women from the previous day’s skate event will be competitively working the waves in hopes of being “crowned” the weekend’s overall winner.
The two day event is sure to attract competitors, their friends and family, as well as a host of media coverage. Spectators are encouraged to join in the festivities and enjoy the wonderful surroundings. For more information visit, visit the Wicked Wahine Web site.

- Elissa (middle) at the Check It Out Girls Magazine party with C.I.O. editors.
The big Elissa Steamer news is that Check It Out Girls Magazine named her “Best Female Skater” for the second consecutive year. She attended a party in L.A. on May 6, where she received her award. According to her team manager, “lots of madness” went down at the party. She has since recovered from the night of debauchery and is back up in San Francisco in her normal routine: skating! Summer is pretty much here, so everyday is a perfect day for shredding. Her schedule will start to get hectic in mid-June, so she’ll just be chilling in SF until then.
Lauren Perkins has been basically doing the same as Elissa—minus the partying! She’s been home in Huntington Beach, Calif., doing schoolwork, skating and enjoying the nice weather. She also recently attended an etnies Girl photo shoot in Malibu. Lauren’s schedule will also start getting hectic in mid-June, but she’ll be chilling at home until then.
Check back in early June to see what the summer holds for Elissa and Lauren.

Video Clips of Sarah and Tarah on Transworld MX's Thursday Theater
Posted by: Sarah | Wednesday, May 25, 2005
- Tarah Gieger
For your viewing pleasure, Transworld MX’s Thursday Theater has video clips up now of Sarah Whitmore and Tarah Gieger. Sarah is working her way back up to speed after a bout with Epstein Barr Virus last year, and is currently in second place in the WMA standings after races at Glen Helen and Hangtown. Tarah is trailing her by just one point for third, which is even more impressive considering she was laid up for months after breaking her pelvis in four places in late January.
Sarah and Tarah Take Second and Fourth at Hangtown!
Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, May 24, 2005Straight off taking first and second at round one of the WMA National Championships at Glen Helen, etnies Girl team riders Sarah Whitmore and Tarah Gieger finished second and fourth, respectively, at round two of the series at Hangtown Raceway in Sacramento, Calif., this past weekend.

The first moto kicked off at 3:30 p.m. with a quick gate drop, catching nearly a full gate of pro women riders off guard. However, both Whitmore and Gieger took off and managed to work their way to the front of the pack, Whitmore passing everyone all the way to third place, where she engaged in a battle for first with Livia Lancelot and Jessica Patterson. In an uphill turn, Whitmore made the pass, splitting Lancelot and Patterson, supermanning for a few seconds and almost losing control of her bike before ultimately maintaining control and taking the lead. Then, coming off a downhill jump, Whitmore crashed, giving first and second to Patterson and Lancelot.
Meanwhile, Gieger recovered from a tangled crash with Tania Satchwell and Jessica Gephardt and flew past the other riders to fight for position in a pack of girls battling for fifth, sixth and seventh. The tight track made it difficult to pass in several sections, and Gieger ended up finishing sixth.
The girls were once again surprised by the gate drop in the second moto, this time because it took a full 10 seconds. Whitmore and Gieger took off, with Patterson taking the lead. Hot on Patterson’s tail, Whitmore finished second without anyone challenging her position. Gieger was stuck in the pack and, on the uphill jump, sailed over Elizabeth Bash and crashed, giving up her fourth place position. She wasted no time getting back on her bike, and was back in the race to finish fifth.
After the race this weekend, Whitmore trails six points behind leader Jessica Patterson, while Gieger is just one point behind Whitmore for third. Round three will be held at Thunder Valley in Colorado in July. Before then, Whitmore and Gieger will be riding together at Mammoth and qualifying for Loretta Lynn’s.
Tarah Interview on Racer X Online!

Despite breaking her pelvis in four places while racing in late January and having just gotten cleared to ride by her doctor, Tarah smoked the competition last Saturday to win round one of the WMA National Championships at Glen Helen—a win that she’s defending today at round two at Hangtown in Sacramento, Calif.

etnies Girl and BlueStarrMX team riders Tarah Gieger and Sarah Whitmore kicked off the highly anticipated 2005 Women's Motocross Association (WMA) National Series at Glen Helen this past Saturday by taking first and second place, respectively. Coming off a pelvis injury sustained in late January, Tarah swept both heats and won the Sick Racing Holeshot Award in the second moto, earning her the overall win. “I’ve never won both motos, so I am really excited about this accomplishment,” she said. Sarah battled it out against Jessica Patterson to secure second place overall.

etnies Girl motocross team manager Matt Chapman was thrilled with the team’s results and said, “I can't think of a better way to kick off the season than by taking the top two positions in the race this weekend and emerging as the WMA leaders. We wish the girls best of luck in round two this weekend at Hangtown.”
Fuel TV's “GKA” was on-site to catch all the action for an upcoming episode, as was Speedvision's “2 Wheel Tuesday.” “With almost a full gate here today these women put on a great race for their fans,” said WMA President Miki Keller. “Our pro program has been growing by leaps and bounds with more and more amateur girls turning pro each year, so the races will just continue to get more competitive.”
Both Gieger and Whitmore have been in Southern California since early last week preparing for the race. Next up, they're off to round two of the WMA National Series held in conjunction with the AMA National Outdoor Series on Saturday at Hangtown in Sacramento, Calif., followed by round three at Thunder Valley in Lakewood, Colo., on July 23-24, round four in Washougal, Wash., and round five at Steel City in Delmont, Penn. Snow Team Report: Spring Madness!
Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, May 10, 2005
- The ThirtyTwo photo shoot at June Mountain
As the snow season winds down, most of the etnies Girl and ThirtyTwo team riders are scrambling to get in their last minute powder shots while others are planning a break from the snow altogether. Here's a quick update on what the team has been up to lately…
The ThirtyTwo photo shoot turned out to be a huge success! Despite semi-decent weather conditions, the team had a blast hanging out and shredding at June Mountain.

- Janna going XTREME!!!
Janna Meyen is back in Bend, Ore., still working on her video part with Volcom films. She plans on hitting up the summer camps at Mt. Hood to get some more footage.
Alexis Waite has been quite the busy bee lately! She’s been on the road for the last couple of months, attending events such as the all-girls super park at Copper Mountain, Colo. She recently got third place at the Roxy Chicken Jam, which took place in St. Moritz, Switzerland, on April 8-10. Then she jetted home and took fourth in the rail jam and tied for fifth in slopestyle at the Nikita Chickita Snowdown in Tahoe on April 16. In between driving up and down the West Coast, she found the time to move back to Bend, Ore., from Utah. This week, she'll be back on the road again, attending the etnies Girl photo shoot May 11-13 in Southern California.
That's about it for now. Till next time, keep the dream alive...
Mahalo, Danke, Tak, Merci, Gracias, Domo arigato Mr. Robato!

MX Team Report: No Sleep Till Glen Helen!
Posted by: Sarah | Friday, May 6, 2005The past month has been a busy one for the moto team, as they get ready for the first WMA National at Glen Helen next Saturday, May 14. Here’s a rundown of what they’ve been up to.
Tarah Gieger is 100 percent recovered from the horrific crash in January that broke her pelvis in four places, and is ready to pick up where she left off last November when she won the Z1R WMA Cup in Texas. She was planning on racing a Loretta Lynn’s Area qualifier at Hurricane Hills, Pa., but the race was rained out. She’ll do the LL Area qualifier in Virginia next weekend before heading to Glen Helen. “I can't wait to get back on the track with the other WMA Pros at the first National at Glen Helen,” says Tarah. “I've been training hard and riding every day, and I'm ready!”
In other news, Sarah Whitmore has been in France for the past week, where she’s been racing the prestigious “Challenge MXF” women's pro motocross event. The last we heard, she was having a great time checking out the sights, putting in some fast lap times, and meeting and racing against some of the top pro European girls, including Livia Lancelot, the “Fastest Girl in France,” and Belgian champion Elien De Winter.
