Skate Team Report: Happy Birthday, Elissa!

X Games X
Elissa receives her gold medal at last year's X Games while Lauren checks out her bronze

First things first, happy birthday to Elissa Steamer!

Now back to your regularly scheduled skate team report…

Elissa Steamer
Birthday girl Elissa and her gold medal

X Games 11 is just around the corner on August 4-7, and both Elissa and Lauren Perkins will be there representing etnies, along with etnies European rider Evelien Bouilliart from Belgium. The girl’s contest is next Friday, August 5, and since three out of the 10 girls competing are etnies riders, good things are bound to happen—especially since Elissa is the defending champion and Lauren placed third last year!

Lauren Perkins and Evelien Bouilliart
Lauren and Evelien in Rotterdam

Elissa is currently up in San Francisco skating everyday since the weather has been nice, getting ready for the X Games and hopefully having a big birthday blowout. She’s coming down to L.A. a couple of days early next week to hang at etnies and with friends before the X Games begin.

Lauren just got back from a trip to Europe, where she checked out the Snickers World Cup of Skateboarding contest in Rotterdam, Holland, (it was a guy’s contest, so she was a spectator) and attended Girlie Camps in Montpellier, France. She said she had a great time and can’t wait to go back. Other than that, she’s just been chilling at home in Huntington Beach and getting ready for the X Games next week.

If you want the chance to check out Girlie Camps for yourself, make sure to enter to win a trip to Girlie Camps in Europe by August 2!

Meet Sally, July’s etnies Girl of the Month

Posted by: Sarah | Sunday, July 31, 2005
Sally Fitzgibbons

Sally, July’s etnies Girl of the Month, has not only been making waves lately in her native Australia—she’s been making history. The 14-year-old surf phenom and etnies Australia rider etched her name in Australian surfing history earlier this year by becoming the youngest ever surfer, male or female, to win an ASP rated Pro Junior event during the Billabong Girls Easter Surf Fest. “She has got it,” says Rebecca Woods, who edged out Sally for first place in the 1 star rated World Qualifying Series (WQS) at the same event. “She is world champion material, you can see it in her attitude and her surfing is amazing.” Sally lives near Sydney, where she is in her third year of high school. We spoke with her about what she does when she’s not surfing, what it’s like to compete and some of her favorite things. To check out photos and footage her surfing, visit Sally’s Web site.

etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Sally:
I love playing all my sports, and I also play guitar and skateboard.

etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Sally:
I like a range of sports and am currently succeeding in surfing, cross country running, athletics, touch football and soccer. This keeps me busy all year round and helps keep me fit.

etnies Girl: How did you get involved in surfing?
Sally:
I was taught by my dad and brothers, who all surf. Most of the people in my town surf as well.

etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Sally:
etnies is a popular brand and it is great to be associated with a company that is so high profile and has such a great range of products.

etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Sally:
Because etnies Girl is so popular it is hard to be sponsored. So when I applied for sponsorship, I knew if I was accepted that it was a reflection of how I was performing as a surfer. I am very happy to be part of the Australian team.

etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Sally:
I surf, play plenty of sports, play guitar and hang with some friends. I just bought a Jet Ski with my brother so it’s really fun taking it out and doing a bit of towing.

etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Sally:
Family, friends, watching other people strive to do their best and from within.

etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Sally:
Finally winning the U16’s Gromfest at Lennox Head in New South Wales on my fourth attempt, winning the Pro Junior event at Maroochydore in Queensland during the Billabong Girls Easter Surf Fest and being the runner-up to Rebecca Woods in the WQS at the same event.

etnies Girl: You’ve killing it at the contests lately, Sally! What is it like to compete?
Sally:
They have been exciting and I have been competing against plenty of older girls so I have been learning a lot quickly. It is really fun being out in the water with only four other girls in great surf conditions.

etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Sally:
Bec Woods once told me to keep doing what I am doing and to follow my dreams. A small bit of advice, but it reminds me of how lucky I am.

etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Sally:
Being able to compete in all the sports I am interested in and live a healthy lifestyle while pushing myself to reach my goals.

Caia Koopman Art Show in L.A.

 Latch Key
Latch Key 12" x 12" by Caia Koopman showing at La Luz de Jesus Gallery

If you live in the Los Angeles area, make sure to check out an upcoming show by one of our favorite artists, Caia Koopman. Caia will be showing 10 new paintings in a group show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery from August 5-28, 2005.

A native of California, Caia attended UCSC in Santa Cruz, Calif., where she earned her B.A. in Fine Art. Santa Cruz also turned out to be the place that seduced her into the local skateboarding scene. It was there that she learned to skate ramps, streets, pools and Derby Park. Skateboarding led to skateboard graphics, and her first limited edition T-shirt design for Santa Cruz Skateboards. After earning her art degree, Caia moved to the mountains to snowboard and spent many winters following the snow. It was this love for snowboarding that inspired her to strive for a career creating snowboard graphics and later branching out to become a commercial artist. Since then, her artwork has been featured in numerous national and international magazines, including Surfing Girl, Mademoiselle, Details, Snowboarder Magazine, Teen and Teen People, and her paintings have been used commercially for many years as graphics for snowboards, skateboards and wakeboards. Caia has also been featured on MTV for her snowboarding and painting.

Inspired by color, dreams, nature, politics and life, Caia's paintings tend to incorporate a connection between people and the environment. She loves beauty and color and tries to capture a certain wisdom and knowing, as well as a sense of mischief, in her characters. Caia is currently working as a freelance illustrator and painter in Oceanside, Calif.

July’s Skate Team Report

WSR ’05
Where’s Lauren? She’s somewhere in this crowd in Rotterdam after Bastien won the WSR ’05 contest…

Elissa Steamer and Lauren Perkins both competed in the World Championships of Skateboarding in Münster, Germany, at the beginning of the month, and the results were amazing. Elissa placed first and Lauren got fourth. Congrats go out to both of them!

Elissa Steamer
Elissa is ready to golf!

Since returning from Germany, Elissa has been hanging out in her hometown of San Francisco skating everyday, golfing, shooting photos and filming. This week she is planning to take a trip down to Southern California to drop by etnies and try to convince her team manager to take her out for a round of golf—we’ll see about that! Actually, he owes her at least a round of golf after her win in Münster. After that, she’ll head back up to SF to skate and get ready for the X Games August 4-7, at which she’ll be defending her title from last year.

Lauren was back at home in Huntington Beach, Calif., very briefly after her trip to Münster before she headed right back to Europe—lucky her! She left for Holland last Friday, July 15, to go check out the WSR ’05 contest. This was a dude’s event, so she didn’t get to skate, but she did get to chill in Rotterdam for the weekend and watch etnies skate team rider Bastien Salabanzi win the contest. Congrats, Bastien! She is currently in Montpellier, France, where she’s participating in a Girlie Skate Camp from July 18-24. After Girlie Camps she will have about 10 days to get ready for the X Games.

Speaking of Girlie Camps, don’t forget to sign up for your chance to win a trip to Girlie Camps in Europe!

Downhill Jam

Downhill Jam, etnies’ skate game, has been down for the past week while we made some upgrades—namely, to prevent the people who were hacking into it to give themselves high scores (ooh, clever!) and to add some features. The good news is that it’s back up. So let out a big sigh of relief and go get your high score on!

It may be the middle of summer, but the snow team never rests. Here's a quick update on what the etnies Girl and ThirtyTwo team has been up to…

Alexis and Leanne
Leanne and Lexi (left to right) at MGT Snowboard Camp, Photo: Susan Waite

Janna Meyen has come off a stellar season by being nominated for an ESPY Award for Best Female Action Sports Athlete! Keep your fingers crossed for Janna and make sure to tune in to the ESPY Awards this Sunday, July 17, (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET) to see if she wins.

Leanne Pelosi and Alexis Waite have been coaching at the MGT Snowboard Camp in Whistler, British Columbia, all week. Here's what Leanne had to say:

"So far, the girls have been killing it and having a s#!$ load of fun. It’s going really, really well...no injuries yet other than a missing tooth from chasing Lexi around."

In other snow news, Alexis Waite took home some cash from the Abominable Snow Jam last month at Mt. Hood for nabbing second place in the slopestyle event. Congrats, Lexi!

That's about it for now. Check back to see if Janna won the ESPY Award, and for more details on movie premieres and other juicy gossip!

Evelien, a native of Belgium, has been on fire lately, also winning the first stop of Push, the etnies Girl Jam in Munich, Germany, in May, and taking third at the World Championships of Skateboarding in Münster, Germany, this month.

Congratulations also go out to etnies Girl European rider Ianire Eloriagga, who took third place.
