Melissa, the current etnies Girl of the Month, is especially near and dear to etnies Girl’s heart—in fact, we think she’s such a great snowboarder that we’ve signed her on as one of our flow riders. Naturally, we want everyone to know about her. The 17-year-old currently lives in Big Bear, and has plans to move to Breckenridge, Colo., this fall. Right now, she’s just enjoying the summer and getting in lots of fishing before she heads to Mt. Hood to do some riding. Sounds like a nice way to spend the summer if you ask us! We chatted with Melissa about how she got into snowboarding, her biggest accomplishment and her coolest snowboarding moment.

etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Melissa:
I have a lot of interest in snowboarding. I think that it is a very fun sport. I also like to skateboard, but I'm not that good. When I'm at the beach, I have to go surfing. And on my days off lately, I've been going fishing with some of my friends. I recently caught a two-foot trout!

etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Melissa:
One of my talents, I'd have to say, would be ceramics. I like to make pots. I learned in the ninth grade and I have liked it ever since…kind of like snowboarding.

etnies Girl: How did you get involved in snowboarding?
Melissa:
When I was really young, my mom had me on skis…I’ve been skiing for as long as I can remember. Then I got on my school snowboarding/ski team and decided to try snowboarding, which I fell in love with. My grandpa bought me my first snowboard, a Morrow 134 cm—old school. I met my boyfriend, Chad Tarbell, in the ninth grade and he was into snowboarding also, so it worked out. We’re still together too.

etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Melissa:
I think that it is awesome that every month there’s an etnies Girl. It gives a lot of girls like me a great opportunity for exposure and also to meet new people.

etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Melissa:
I believe that I'm an etnies girl because I'm very outgoing and easy to get along with. I feel like I'm on a steady path. I'm energetic, fun, crazy, stylish and confident.

etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Melissa:
For fun now that I'm not snowboarding, I have been going fishing at Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. After that, I’ll be going up to Mt. Hood in Oregon.

etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Melissa:
I find inspiration within everyone around me.

etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Melissa:
I would have to say my biggest accomplishment is where I am at today. I feel like I’m on the right track.

etnies Girl: Why do you love snowboarding so much?
Melissa:
I love snowboarding so much because I get to travel and see different terrains, and because of all of the people who I get to meet along the way. There are so many incredible aspects to snowboarding.

etnies Girl: What’s your coolest snowboarding moment?
Melissa:
I landed my first backside 540 not too long ago. That was pretty sweet.

etnies Girl: Do you enjoy competing?
Melissa:
Yes, I enjoy competing. I think that it helps you step it up a little and also just because you get to be out there shredding with all the girls.

etnies Girl: Do you have any advice for girls who want to turn pro someday?
Melissa:
I would just say keep it fun and experience lots of things, and if you love it, stick to it.

etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Melissa:
When I was first learning to jump and spin I remember my boyfriend, Chad, would say, “Just pop and spin.” It worked for me.

etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Melissa:
My family, friends and my boyfriend are really important to me ‘cause I always have a shoulder to lean on, or someone to talk to.

etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to say before we go?
Melissa:
I'm thankful for all of the things I have learned and people I have met along the way to becoming a pro snowboarder.

Tarah Gieger Wins Mammoth MX Again!

Posted by: Sarah | Monday, June 26, 2006

mammothmoto094400_400

Congratulations to etnies Girl team rider Tarah Gieger for winning the Mammoth Motocross event in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., for the second year in a row last Friday, June 23!

Tarah secured her victory with a first place finish in the first moto and third place finish in the second moto. Tarah took the lead early in the first moto by grabbing the holeshot and then easily maintained her position through all seven laps to finish in front of Katie McGuire in second and Jaqueline Ross in third. The second moto proved to be a bit more of a challenge, as Tarah and Katie McGuire collided, causing them both to fall. However, Tarah, a seasoned pro, quickly recovered and finished third, giving her the overall win. Congrats, TG!

Next up, Tarah and teammate Sarah Whitmore will compete in round three of the WMA Pro National Series at Thunder Valley MX in Lakewood, Colo., on July 22, round four at Washougal MX in Washougal, Wash., July 27-29, round five at Broome-Tioga at Binghamton, NY, Aug. 18-19, and round six at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Penn., Sept. 1-2.

Go Skateboarding Day at the etnies Skatepark

Posted by: Sarah | Friday, June 23, 2006

laurengsd400_419

More than 1,000 people spent Go Skateboarding Day with the etnies crew at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest on Wednesday, including our very own Lauren Perkins (yep, that's her in the photo) and the one, the only, Mr. Tony Hawk. The day included lots of skating (natch), a free barbeque, a “Death Race” contest, a raffle of etnies, Flip, Baker, Birdhouse, Fury and Hook-Ups gear, and an unofficial wall ride contest at a local secret spot. A good time, as they say, was had by all. We hope you had yourselves a very merry Go Skateboarding Day. The next one is only 363 days away.

Sarah Whitmore Video Clip on Transworld MX

etnies Girl team rider Sarah Whitmore makes no bones about struggling with the Women’s Motocross Association MX Nationals thus far due to a separated shoulder in this video clip on Transworld Motocross. We would argue that placing second and sixth with an injury isn’t something to scoff at, but she is the consummate competitor and naturally wants to do better. Check out the clip for a full interview with Sarah about her injury and her plans for the rest of the season. We hope your shoulder heals quickly, Sarah!

It’s official: etnies’ own Elissa Steamer is now on Zero:

Black Box Distribution is proud to announce the addition of professional skateboarder Elissa Steamer to the Zero team. Since her debut part in the 1996 video “Welcome to Hell,” Elissa has proven herself time and time again.

Elissa currently resides in San Francisco and will be traveling nonstop while filming for a Zero promo video as well as the upcoming etnies video. The release date of Elissa’s first Zero pro model board has yet to be determined.

Jamie Thomas says of the addition: “Elissa’s raw approach to life and skateboarding is a perfect fit for Zero. It’s like a reunion of sorts; I enjoyed working with her when filming “Welcome to Hell” and I’m psyched to get the chance to work with her again. I think she’s the raddest girl to ever ride a skateboard.”
