Calling all etnies Girls! We have a new contest that’s just for you…

All you have to do is grab a camera and take a photo that illustrates who an etnies Girl is best. What that means is up to you, whether it’s a photo of you skating, painting a picture, snowboarding, having fun with friends, making music, riding your dirt bike—you name it. What we DON’T want to see are model shots…we repeat, this is NOT a modeling contest.

One grand prize winner will be selected to win a head-to-toe etnies Girl outfit and a pair of shoes, and four runners-up will each receive one pair of shoes of their choice. Enter the contest by October 31, 2006, for your chance to win. We can’t wait to see your photos!

Kris, the current etnies Girl of the Month, has made a name for herself in softball, but skateboarding is one of her true loves. “It’s completely different from softball, and that’s what I like about it,” explains the Indiana native. The 18-year-old high school senior aspires to be a personal trainer or sports photographer; currently, she works at local pet kennel called Best Friends. We caught up with Kris to discuss how she got into skateboarding, what she likes about etnies Girl and some of her favorite things.

etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Kris:
Besides skating, I also like to play softball, mess around on the guitar, running, soccer, shopping and hanging out with friends.

etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Kris:
My biggest talent would definitely have to be softball. People tell me all the time how good I am at it, and how much they enjoy watching me play. That’s what keeps me going.

etnies Girl: How did you get involved in skateboarding?
Kris:
I first got involved in skating about five years ago, when I bought my first board. Then I met one of my good friends on my softball team, Jen, who also skated. I would go over to her house, and we would skate everyday. Ever since then, I’ve just kept going and getting better at it everyday.

etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Kris:
The thing I like about etnies Girl is that it gives girls all around the world the chance to show us what they got. It gives them that exposure that they needed to take the next step.

etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Kris:
I am an etnies Girl because I like to do my own thing, and have fun doing it. I am also confident.

etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Kris:
For fun I like playing soccer with friends, playing “DDR,” shopping, swimming, hanging out with the softball girls and definitely skating.

etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Kris:
I find inspiration in books I read, music, family and friends.

etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Kris:
My biggest accomplishment is getting recognized around the county as a good softball player and being awarded for it.

etnies Girl: Why do you love skateboarding so much?
Kris:
I like skating because you can go out and do your own thing. You don’t have to be some place at a certain time, so you’re never late. If you screw up on something, it’s your fault and not someone on your team’s fault. It’s completely different from softball, and that’s what I like about it.

etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Kris:
The best piece of advice I’ve gotten is to keep my weight back when I’m hitting during softball. During my freshmen year, my coach told me to do it. It’s worked ever since, and my hitting just keeps getting better and better.

etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Kris:
My friends and family are what’s important to me. If I ever need help or I’m feeling down, I can go to them and they can help me. I can tell them anything, and that’s what I love about them.

etnies Girl-Sponsored WCWR Shines at First WSA Contest of the Season

Posted by: Sarah | Wednesday, August 9, 2006

wcwrsano400_400

Congratulations to the etnies Girl-sponsored West Coast Wave Riders (WCWR) all-girls surf team, whose members competed at the first Western Surfing Association (WSA) contest of the 2006/2007 Championship Tour at San Onofre over the weekend! All of the summer surf sessions seem to be paying off, as WCWR team members did well in every division in which they competed. Below are the WCWR team results from the contest:

Girls 17 & under
Erica C. – first place
Tess L. – fourth place

Girls 15 & under
Marissa S. – third place

Girls 12 & under
Paige O. – first place
Torrey M. – third place
Shelby D. – fourth place
Danielle W. – fifth place

etnies Girl sponsors WCWR, an all-girls surf club and team based in Huntington Beach, Calif., that grooms and supports girls in becoming competitive surfers. WCWR was born about three years ago when founders Mark and Debbi Ortiz discovered the lack of support and mentoring available for girls in the sport. Since then, the organization has grown to 22 team members between the ages of eight and 16 from California who travel and compete together. This year, the team, coached by Tom Lustbaum, will be sending two to four girls to the NSSA Nationals and is planning a training trip to Costa Rica or Fiji in 2007.

Tarah Gieger Wins Loretta Lynn’s!

Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, August 8, 2006

tarahlorettas2006400_400

Tarah Gieger is on fire! She continued her podium streak last weekend, taking home the 2006 AMA Loretta Lynn Championship title at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., by going 2-1-1 in the three-moto format. Just as in their heated battles at the WMA Round 4 in Washougal, Wash., Tarah and former three-time champion Jessica Patterson faced off against one another throughout the race.

In the first moto, Patterson secured first place, with Tarah taking second and Leah Cantrell in third. The second moto saw Tarah in first place, with Patterson in second and defending Loretta Lynn champion and etnies Girl teammate Sarah Whitmore taking third place in her first race back from a dislocated shoulder. In the third and final moto, Tarah quickly secured the first place position. Combined with her second place finish in the first moto and first place finish in the second moto, she was set up for the overall win; however, with two laps remaining, Patterson passed Tarah and held on to first place almost to the end. Unwilling to give up the title, Tarah fought back into first place coming down to the finish line, giving her the win and the overall championship. Congrats, Tarah! We would also like to congratulate Sarah for placing fourth overall.

You can catch Tarah and Sarah next at WMA Round 5 at Broome-Tioga in Binghamton, N.Y., Aug. 18-19, and Round 6 at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Penn., Sept. 1-2.

Tarah Gieger Takes Second Place at WMA Round 4!

Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, August 1, 2006

tarah_washougal400_481

Congratulations to etnies Girl team rider Tarah Gieger for her second place overall finish in Round 4 of the Women’s Motocross Association (WMA) Pro National Series in Washougal, Wash., July 27-28, just a week after finishing second overall in Round 3. Returning to Washougal was a tense experience for Tarah, who broke her neck at the race last year.

Tarah grabbed the holeshot in the first moto and kept a comfortable lead for most of the race; however, halfway through, WMA defending champion Jessica Patterson hurried into second and began to catch up. With only two laps to go, Patterson moved into the lead; Tarah stayed tight and passed her on the inside of a turn, giving her a narrow win. In the second moto, Tarah took the holeshot once again and led for the first few laps, but fell behind Patterson after a small crash and finished second for a second place overall finish.

Unfortunately, etnies Girl teammate Sarah Whitmore was again unable to race due to injury. Next up, both Sarah and Tarah will be heading out to the Loretta Lynn Championships in Tennessee from August 1-5, and then to WMA Round 5 at Broome-Tioga in Binghamton, N.Y., Aug. 18-19, and Round 6 at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Penn., Sept. 1-2.
