Tanya
Posted by: Sarah | Tuesday, October 31, 2006
Tanya, the current etnies Girl of the Month, also has the distinction of being the grand prize winner of the Step Up to Be the Next etnies Girl contest. etnies Girl, Journeys and Seventeen flew Tanya and her friend, Amelia, to Southern California for an action-packed weekend at the annual etnies Goofy vs. Regular (GvR) Contest and etnies 20th Anniversary grand finale celebration held Oct. 20-22. The girls had a great time watching the contests (and, in Amelia’s case, competing in the etnies Girl PUSH Jam), rubbing elbows with etnies pros, attending the Beastie Boys concert, shopping for free etnies Girl gear in the Company Store and much, much more. We caught up with the 17-year-old New Jersey native about her passion for snowboarding, what inspires her and the best piece of advice she’s ever received.
“There are no limits as to what I can do to have fun while I’m strapped to my board.”
etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Tanya: I love snowboarding; it’s the best sport in the world. Aside from that, I love anything involving a board—skateboarding, longboarding, wakeboarding, etc. I also like to eat…constantly.
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Tanya: I guess my talents are just reflected in my snowboarding and skateboarding on a good day; but aside from that, I’m not so talented. Oh, and I can make my eyes squeak!
etnies Girl: How did you get involved in snowboarding?
Tanya: Well I was 11 years old and randomly saw some video footage of Tara Dakides snowboarding. I thought she looked so awesome and from the moment my eyes met the TV I was stunned into disbelief—she was incredible at it. Ever since then, I’ve been calling Mountain Creek home in the winter.
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Tanya: Not too many board sport companies have a separate collection of clothing, shoes, etc., specifically designed for female riders, but etnies Girl is just that, and more. Just by being an etnies Girl of the Month, girls like myself who are passionate about their sport, but who aren’t getting the chance to show the world their talents, can do so with etnies.
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Tanya: I’m an etnies Girl because I push myself to succeed in all that I do and most of the time it pays off. I’m almost always in a positive mood, and I love to have fun—either on the mountain, with friends, skating or just hanging out, I can make a dull situation fun.
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Tanya: Eating is fun, and I do a lot of that.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Tanya: If I made a list, it would go on forever. In snowboarding, I find my inspiration from the pro snowboarders I admire and one of my best friends, Amelia. She’s one of the best skateboarders I know and she’s always trying new, insane tricks you’d only see in “Tony Hawk’s Underground.” I find inspiration in other ways from my friends, family and boyfriend. Luckily, the people I’m always around are all really cool, and there are certain things about each of them that inspire me to be a better person.
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Tanya: There have been a few, but as of right now I personally consider it a cool accomplishment to be able to have this interview with etnies Girl.
etnies Girl: Why do you love snowboarding so much?
Tanya: I can ride at crazy speeds down the mountain, I can create my own trails through the trees, I can grind rails and hit jumps, and the satisfaction of actually landing the tricks is indescribable—basically it’s that there are no limits as to what I can do to have fun while I’m strapped to my board. Plus, the progression that snowboarding as a sport is experiencing in 2006 is insane—more people of all ages and sizes are buying boards, and more people are stomping 1080s and raising the bar even higher. Again, it’s all limitless and I love that.
etnies Girl: How does it feel to be selected as the grand prize winner of the Step Up to Be the Next etnies Girl contest?
Tanya: To be completely honest, when I found out that I won, I started jumping up and down, ran into my sister’s room like a lunatic to tell her the news and called some friends. I can’t thank etnies Girl enough.
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Tanya: “Oh my God, Tanya, just do it already! Everybody’s waiting.” My sister said this to me, and while it doesn’t seem like the best piece of advice to get, it really was. She was telling me to hit a rail, frontside it and stop making everyone wait. (I was stalling in front of it, about to chicken out.) Well, to make her shut up, I hit the rail and landed my trick, and we just took the chair up to the terrain park again and again. I realized that I should just try something new if I have a strong feeling that I’m ready for it. If I just wait and hold back I may never progress, and that’s no fun.
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Tanya: My entire family is important to me because I love them, we help each other out and we’re there to support each other at any given time. My friends are important to me because they’re the best friends a girl could find and they’re always there for me when I need them. (Love you guys!) And my boyfriend, Charlie, means so much because I love him like crazy and we have so much fun together. Other things that are important to me: snow days, my driver’s license, my phone and sherbet.

Calling All etnies Girls Photo Contest Extended to Nov. 30!
Posted by: Sarah | Thursday, October 26, 2006
We’ve received some amazing entries for the Calling All etnies Girls Photo Contest!
We already knew that etnies Girls are a talented and creative bunch, but we’ve been really impressed with some of the excellent entries we’ve received. If you’ve already entered the contest, pat yourself on the back…and if you haven’t, it’s your lucky day. We’ve decided to give you some more time to get your entries in, and have just extended the contest to Nov. 30, 2006.
Here’s what you need to do: grab a camera and take a photo that illustrates who an etnies Girl is best. What that means is up to you, whether it’s a photo of you skating, painting a picture, snowboarding, having fun with friends, making music, riding your dirt bike—you name it.
This should be a no-brainer, but this is what we don’t want to see: modeling shots (this contest is about capturing the awesome things that etnies Girls accomplish, not about what they look like), nude shots (we’ve received them and, trust us, we don’t want them!) and photos taken off the Internet (you’re not fooling anyone, missy). Okay, enough with the lecture…go out and take some photos!
One grand prize winner will be selected to win a head-to-toe etnies Girl outfit and a pair of shoes, and four runners-up will each receive one pair of shoes of their choice. Make sure to enter the contest by the new closing date of Nov. 30, 2006, for your chance to win. We can’t wait to see your photos!

Vintage Lauren and Elissa!
Posted by: Sarah | Friday, October 13, 2006
Look what landed in our inbox this week! Lauren Perkins sent in this photo of Elissa Steamer and herself (then a mere 12 years old—how cute is she?), circa January 2000. We love it all: Lauren’s baggy shorts, the random elbow and broom handle, Lauren and Elissa’s matching haircuts, the list goes on. But most of all, it’s nice to know that nearly seven years later these two are still teammates and friends.

etnies Girl Riders Sweep etnies European Open in Rome!
Posted by: Sarah | Monday, October 9, 2006
Congratulations to etnies Girl riders Ianire Elorriaga, Evelien Bouilliart and Kristina Westad for taking the top three spots, respectively, in Girls’ Street at the etnies European Open in Rome this past weekend!
Ianire, a Spanish native who rides for etnies Girl Europe, has been on fire lately, recently winning the European Skateboard Championship in Girls’ Street. Her two 45-second runs clinched the win with tricks like a kickflip over the main hip and a frontside tailslide on the big quarter. Evelien’s backside boardslide on the big rail and smooth backside 180 over the hip helped earn her second place, while Kristina, an etnies Girl Europe rider known as “The Viking” since she hails from Norway, showed her technical skills with a nice backside heelflip over the big hip and boardslide on the small rail to nail third.
The podium sweep was déjà vu all over again for the girls, as they also reigned supreme in Girls’ Street at the etnies Open in Munich, Germany, in May, with Evelien in first, Kristina in second and Ianire in third. Great job, ladies!

etnies Girl Is Pink for October!
Posted by: Sarah | Thursday, October 5, 2006
etnies Girl has joined Pink for October in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Click on the pink ribbon on the top right side of every page to link to Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), a breast cancer awareness organization etnies Girl supports, for more information on the disease. We have also compiled basic facts that every female should know about breast cancer below.
Breast Cancer: Learn the Facts
Since October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re helping to spread the word about the disease. When you see info about breast cancer, do you usually just tune out? You shouldn’t! It isn’t necessary to stress yourself out about breast cancer, but you should know the facts and how to do a monthly breast self exam.
Early Detection Is the Best Prevention
The single most important thing you can do to survive breast cancer is to catch it early. An increasing number of women are being diagnosed with the disease in their 20s and 30s—an age group that many doctors still wrongly believe is too young for breast cancer. Unfortunately, no female past puberty is too young to get the disease, and there are young breast cancer survivors to prove it. Unless you are classified as high risk—meaning your mom or sister has or had breast cancer—you won’t start getting mammograms (x-rays that check for breast cancer) until you are 40. So what is the best way to protect yourself until then? It’s simple: by doing a monthly breast self exam.
Doing a monthly breast self exam is the best way to find any potential growth because it makes you aware of your own body. Contrary to popular opinion, breasts are not necessarily smooth, and in fact are often lumpy and bumpy, so the goal of self exams is for you to become familiar with what is normal for you. After doing monthly self exams for a while, you will be better able to notice any changes in your breasts that might be of concern. If you are ever in doubt about a change in your breasts, see your doctor.
Remember, early detection is the best prevention!
Breast Cancer Stats & Facts
Below are some important breast cancer stats and facts, courtesy of the Young Survival Coalition.
- One in every 258 women between the ages of 30 and 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer within the next ten years
- Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women ages 35 to 40
- Approximately 10,000 women under the age of 40 will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and close to 1,500 will die
- There are nearly 250,000 women in the United States under the age of 40 currently living with breast cancer
- Young women's cancers are generally more aggressive and lead to lower survival rates
- Young women with breast cancer struggle with many issues that their post-menopausal counterparts do not, including early menopause, pregnancy after diagnosis, higher mortality rates and a more advanced cancer at diagnosis
- Young women are virtually excluded from breast cancer studies and trials
- The good news is that when breast cancer is caught in its earliest stages, the five-year survival rate for young women with breast cancer is 85 percent

Next up, snowboarder Alexis Waite (pictured above) will co-host the show on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT), and etnies Girl flow surfer Schuyler McFerran (pictured below) will co-host on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. PDT (9 p.m. EDT). Each show will rebroadcast the following day at noon PDT (3 p.m. EDT). (Viewers should check local listings as airtimes can vary by location.)
etnies Girl Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month During October
Posted by: Sarah | Monday, October 2, 2006
The statistic that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime hits pretty close to home. Most of us already know someone who has been affected by the disease, and those of us who don’t likely will eventually. With that in mind, etnies Girl is proud to announce our continued support of breast cancer charities Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC) and the Keep A Breast Foundation during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
For the past year, etnies Girl has been collecting one dollar from each shoe sold through the etnies Girl Online Store and, at the end of this month, we will present the final amount of over $3,000 to B4BC. We have also designed a special limited edition T-shirt for B4BC (pictured above) that will be sold exclusively through CCS Girls Online during October with 100 percent of proceeds going straight to B4BC to help fund breast cancer awareness and educational programs.
Also a strong supporter of the Keep A Breast Foundation, etnies Girl recently participated in the “Bridge Mural” project at the Action Sports Retailer trade show in San Diego, which ultimately raised $18,000 to be split between Keep A Breast and Surf Aid International. Additionally, we were one of several brands that collaborated with an artist to design a T-shirt that was sold exclusively at ASR with a portion of proceeds going toward the social mission organizations.
Throughout the month of October, etnies Girl is supporting “Keep A Breast Kings & Queens,” a special exhibition taking place in San Francisco. The show fuses skateboarding’s past and present, uniting the most influential men and women in the industry to raise awareness for breast cancer. Breast casts of musicians Pink and Joan Jett, etnies Girl skater Elissa Steamer and more have been decorated for the exhibition by leading athletes and artists such as Mark Gonzales, Robert Williams, Ed Templeton and Wes Humston. Curated and documented by skate photographer Désirée Astorga, the casts will be showcased alongside Astorga’s photographs depicting the casting process from strips of plaster to artistic creation. “Keep A Breast Kings & Queens” officially opens on Oct. 7 at the Receiver Gallery in the Mission District, San Francisco. The show will be open to the public through Oct. 29. All casts will be auctioned off on the Keep A Breast website.
