The 11th Hour, Revisited
Posted by: Brink | Friday, November 30, 2007
The following is a letter from Leonardo DiCaprio about the film, The 11th Hour, that opened in theaters in Fall 2007. The documentary features Sole Technology and etnies owner and president, Pierre Andre Senizergues and his efforts in going green, including the etnies SEED Project.
Friends,
I am writing to tell you about my new environmental film, “The 11th Hour.” The film documents the environmental crises we face and the solutions we must begin to implement.
With the help of over fifty of the world's most prominent thinkers and activists, including reformer Mikhail Gorbachev, physicist Stephen Hawking, and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai, “The 11th Hour” documents the grave problems facing the planet's life systems. Global warming, deforestation, mass species extinction, and depletion of the oceans' habitats are all addressed.
However, the most powerful element of “The 11th Hour” is not a portrait of a planet in crisis, but an offering of hope and solutions. The film ends with a call for restorative action through reshaping human activity.
“The 11th Hour” will be released on DVD soon You can go to www.11thhouraction.com to get more information on the movie. We need the message of this movie to hit as far and wide as possible. The hope is us. Let's begin.
Thank You,
Leonardo DiCaprio

Our very own Tarah Gieger took a little trip to Las Vegas for the 5th annual AMA Sports Awards where she won Female Rider of the Year. Nominees Mandi Mastin and Jessica Patterson were tough competition for sure, but at the end of the night it was Tarah who took home the coveted prize. Ahh, Vegas, you never disappoint...

DJ Tina T In The Mix
Posted by: Alex | Monday, November 19, 2007
Tina Turnbull, aka DJ Tina T, has made a name for herself in the action sports scene through strong affiliations with companies like Red Bull, Vapors Magazine, LRG clothing, Nine Star Skate Shops, Active, etnies and the Mt Dew Action Sports Tour. During her two years on the Dew Action Sports Tour for Right Guard Extreme, she was also a DJ on site for the X games 2006 and spun for Shaun White’s Penthouse Party when he won the X Games in 2007. A regular DJ for Skate Demos at Nine Star in Los Angeles, she has also spun for Plan B and Matix Skate Teams.
Tina's resume reads like a dream come true... not bad for a someone who just does what she loves. etnies hooked up with Tina to find out more about the self-proclaimed "normal girl".
etnies: How did you get into Spinning/Dj-ing/Turntableism/Scratching?
Tina: I was 15 and had no drivers license and nothing to do basically. I tagged along with my big sis to her friend's house all the time and he had turntables in his room. My initial curiosity turned into a daily obsession at his house. He brought me to check out a DJ battle one day and from then on I got completely sucked into the culture of hip hop. I met other DJs and they invited me to come practice with them. Haven't stopped since!
e: It seems that people consider a DJ someone who just plays records, whereas a turntableist manipulates the tracks and makes something new. How important is that distinction to you?
T: I come from a Tabelist background, so I definitely like to manipulate as much as possible. It doesn’t always have to be with scratching... when I'm mixing two songs to make something new… then I still feel like I'm doing something different and creative. Now that I’m actually making people dance, I be careful how much I stray off into battle mode.
e: How would you take us from ELO to, let’s say 50 Cent? Or would you even consider that mix?
T: Wow, haha... well I have a saying: “just cuz you can doesn’t mean you should.” I mean, I could geek out on the BPM’s of each track and time stretch things to make it fit, but in all actuality, I prob wouldn’t mix the two if they don’t have a good flow.
e: You’re from Seattle where the music scene seems pretty cool but you moved to LA in 2005. Has that affected your music?
T: Moving to LA has opened me up musically more than I could have ever imagined. LA has a unique scene for DJs because we can play across all genres in the club. I can go from 80’s to hip hop to electro and rock all in one night without losing a beat. You can’t really get away with [that] as much in Seattle; it freaks people out, but in LA they are used to it.
e: Congratulations on winning LA Weekly's DJ Spin Off this year! What was that competition all about?
T: They chose 6 finalists from over 300 submissions and they had us battle live in Hollywood. We each had five minutes to just “do what we do.” I prepared the sickest 5 min set that I could think of and thank god it all came off the way I planned at the competition. They flew me to Miami for WMC to DJ and it was one of the best times of my life. I think it felt that much better knowing that I really earned the trip. I worked my ass off on that routine!
e: You also teach on university campuses and do workshops for girls. How'd you get involved in that?
T: I am really involved with Scratch DJ Academy in LA. I love to see up and coming DJs and people getting involved in the culture. I mostly do short demos and talk a little about my career so far and the things Ive been through. I like talking to girls specifically because I would like to see some of the male-dominated industries balance out... and the best way to do that is being a realistic role model. People don’t think I “look” like a DJ… I'm just a normal girl, but I fell in love with something and went for it.
e: Right on. Did you have sort of a mentor when you started? And who’s really big right now that you’d like to work with?
T: I am so pumped to say that I was able to DJ with my two favorites in the last month: DJ AM and DJ RIZ. It's amazing to be next to the ones you look up to and see them get into what you're doing. All you can do when your idols are there watching is try and show off as much as you can! I've had many mentors in diff cities, I'm lucky that I've been taught with so many different styles, it has made me a very well rounded DJ.
e: You've done parties for Shaun White, Red Bull, Nine Star Skate Shops, Active and etnies, so you're very much a part of that community. Do you skate/snowboard or surf at all?
T: I used to snowboard for 8 years and then when I started to DJ more and stay out late on weekends, I kinda fell off. But this season I'm ready to hit the slopes again! I skate a little bit, I recently dropped into a mini ramp and felt like I overcame my biggest fear. Been surfing a few times, last time I got knocked out by my own board, which was kinda lame. After being on the Dew Action Sports Tour, I've gotten hooked watching BMX, but I don’t think I'll ever have the balls to do it, [haha]. Totally want to ride dirt bikes more often! I love the community and I have so much respect for all the athletes.
e: Of all the rad parties you've worked, which ones were your faves?
T: Vegas is always over the top, which I love. By far the best party so far has been for Red Bull at the SIMA surf convention in Mexico. I played on the beach all night and people danced barefoot in the sand, while taking tequila shots outta the bottle! I'm so used to being confined to walls in a club, so to look out to ocean and stars while people partied was an amazing experience!
e: What’s your connection to etnies, and what stokes you out about the brand?
T: I met Don Brown [etnies VP of Marketing] when I was DJ-ing in Mexico for SIMA (he was one of the ones that lost his flip flops in the sand that night!). I looked through catalogs/website and got hooked! The girls line is amazing and it totally fits my style. The brand fits my lifestyle and personality.
e: That's awesome, Tina... consider etnies your mutual fan! Thanks for your time and we'll look for you on the slopes this season!

The Radness (Continued)
Posted by: Alex | Friday, November 16, 2007

Lauren Perkins owns a grill (as in bling not bbq), will sacrifice her Red Bull to keep from getting thrown into the pool and really puts up a good fight. She likes deli turkey by the pound and will wake up early on a morning after just to mop the sticky floors. Despite last Sunday night's candle-lit flan, November 11th is not her birthday.
Nina Buitrago currently has purple hair, takes more pictures than I do, enjoys a friendly game of quarters and thinks Palm Springs looks like Mars with palm trees. She once, after a big fall, spent hours and hours in a hospital bed with a part of her bike stuck deep inside her inner thigh. It is my belief that she will one day invent and rapidly popularize a piece of protective gear that will be for girls what the cup is for guys. The etnies Cornell Jacket in Black (coming in Spring '08) looks like it was made for her.
Leanne Pelosi has a genuine appreciation for Pan Kun and James. She cleverly arms herself with a pair of red boots to ensure that no one will push her into the pool. Plus, she has a knack for evasion. She prepares for an upcoming trip to vegas with silly shades and hours logged at the blackjack table. Her nickname is Party Pelosi for good reason.

Tarah Gieger gets bored easily and doesn't typically wear dresses. After an hour-long full body massage, when most of us would cherish any excuse to keep from moving, Tarah can not be convinced to sit for a mani-pedi. She thinks you can get rid of hiccups by drinking water from the far side of the glass... or just thinks it's fun to watch Sarah try. When she joins forces with Marie, the pair can make even jicama hilarious.
Sarah Whitmore is a sweetheart who likes texting about riding bikes, tapping out and the whoop section. She enjoys reading and will laugh out loud at the funny phrasing in a period piece. She doesn't eat beans, doesn't like her food to touch and won't drink beer.
Mary Osborne does not like jicama in her margaritas. She gets up early in the morning and passes out in her down jacket at night. She sometimes unintentionally matches her shoes to her toenails and is surprised that George Clooney apparently has a girlfriend. The etnies Viola Dress in Orange (new for Spring '08) looks way cuter on her than on the hanger. She is impressively skilled, and therefore usually sober, in the game of quarters.

Becky City
Posted by: Alex | Thursday, November 15, 2007
Becky City is a lovely little farm where skateboards go to run free forever. Well, actually it's a cool site where you can find skateboards that have been reincarnated as fashionable accessories. That's right; not all decks go to that big skate park in the sky...

Donate your old deck and Becky will not only pay proper respect on the sacrificial altar of fashion, she'll also donate $3 to organizations like the Tony Hawk Foundation and the JLA Memorial Fund that help build and maintain public skateparks nationwide.
Congrats Leilani!
Posted by: Alex | Thursday, November 15, 2007
Congrats to etnies surf team rider Leilani Gryde for taking 4th place at the WQS Reef Hawaiian Pro in Haleiwa, Hawaii!!!! This was the final WQS event of the year and she came through with flying colors, as Lei had a tough year due to a knee injury this spring and had to sit out of a few big contests. Leilani walked with 1675 points and $2,000 which puts her back in good position, ranking 20th on WQS ratings.
However, all the fun isn’t over just yet! As an added alternate to the final two contests of the WCT tour, Leilani will hang out in Hawaii to compete in the WCT Roxy Pro at Sunset Beach, Oahu from Nov 23rd – Dec 6th as well as the WCT Billabong Pro at Honolua Bay, Maui from Dec 8th – 20th. These contests don’t give her any qualifying points for the WCT in 2008 but they will give her experience with the top girls in the world to hopefully make the WCT tour in 2009!

It's the etnies girls team lounging poolside in their plush spa robes! Last Friday, the girls were brought together and taken by limo to a surprise destination for their 2007 Team Retreat. About two hours and countless laughs later, they arrived in Palm Springs for a full weekend of fun in the sun. Their only objectives were maxin' and relaxin'... or were they?
Judge for yourself later this week when we post a full photo gallery of the past weekend's etnies Girl exploits...

Hot Shoes From Used Decks??
Posted by: Alex | Friday, November 9, 2007Skateboards are made of wood. Wood is easy to reuse. Ergo... skateboards are easy to recycle, right? WRONG. Apparently, so much glue and chemicals go into your skateboard that eco-friendly disposal isn't so simple. Well, someone found a creative solution. Kris Lovett's RePly project turns used decks into gold. And by "gold", I mean hot shoes. What can your old deck do?

- Courtney & Lisa!
This should have been up a month ago, but we've been busy as etnies... sorry. Now sit back and enjoy this update from Nina B.!
This year's Girls Get On Board at the etnies park in Lake Forest, CA was awesome! A few of the girls stayed from the morning's skate clinic to try out some BMX and it was a blast! These girls were shredding and we even had etnies own Lorena Lima, Courtney from G.R.O. and Lisa Whitaker shreddin' the gnar on some BMX bikes. Beth, the youngest girl out there came with her family, who were all killing it, and after some help from etnies Team Manager John Povah she was helping all the other girls to drop in with coping! Keep an eye out for this young one : )

- Beth!
Also three Michigan gals, Dee, Cass and Sayum came out and represented all the way in California for the event and great pad tan, bowling and good times were had by all. Enjoy! Miss you guys! Thanks for everything,
