More Mary

by: Alex | Monday, February 25, 2008

We've been busy little bees in the GvR hive, but still had a chance to catch up with Featured Rider Mary Osborne. She checked in to give us the following update on her own personal goings on of late.

Mary writes:

I was in Hawaii before and after Christmas for a Patagonia photo shoot.

mary osborne mammoth

Immediately after Hawaii I went straight up to Mammoth for what I like to call "cross-training." We had a group of about 15 close friends and scored perfect powder. I did my first "powder tree run"...keep in mind I am like a fish out of water because I have only seen snow fall a number of times. It's always very exciting for me.

Straight from Mammoth MTN I went to a photo shoot for Wet n Wild cosmetics. I should have pics soon for you.

ASR was a huge success as we launched the Mary Osborne Pro surfboard model by Robert August. The picture is my "Pink Panther" Surfboard model and my friend/artist who did my logo Shannon Menzel.

mary osborne robert august

I am finally home again in little old Ventura. I love it here this time of year, especially when the great waves and beautiful February weather rolls in. I have been surfing Rincon as much as possible, filming and shooting photos.

Last week I spoke at Fillmore Elementary School for a huge skate demo called Skate Pass. This is the first school in California to incorporate skateboarding into PE Curriculum. I basically spoke in front of about 800 kids about skateboarding/surfing and how they both have changed my life. The school is so lucky to have this opportunity and what fun for the kids. Here are a few articles....

"The Fuel TV segment will begin airing tomorrow on Fox Sports Net and continue to run through the week on Fuel TV (28 times). Both Time Warner and ABC went out to the school this week to shoot segments. The ABC segment will run Feb 26 in the AM and the TW will run on Headline news sometime soon. "

"California Approves Skateboarding Curriculum!
Skate Pass, the company bringing skateboarding to schools, has been welcomed into California. California is now the 10th state in the country to approve the curriculum, making history for both skateboarding and the state.

“California has strict physical education standards, which makes this event an incredible opportunity to promote skateboarding to both the state and the country.” Says Eric Klassen Skate Pass Co-Founder.

"Skate Pass is coordinating a press event at Fillmore Middle School on February 5th, 2008. The event will represent a shift for physical education as well as profile skateboarding as helping state and national efforts to fight childhood obesity. The high energy event will include demos and speakers from skateboarding and government health organizations."

"Paul Schmidt, George Powell, Steve Berra were among the invited guests who spoke about skateboarding."

Last week I did a big interview for Ventura Life Magazine. It should be coming out next month.

I think that is it for now. I'll keep you updated as things progress.

THANKS!

MARY O

Thank YOU, Mary!

Regular Reigns Supreme

by: Alex | Saturday, February 23, 2008

gvr glags

So I was wrong; the Goofy Team did not win today's GvR. The thing is, I sort of have a problem saying that Regular is better. Can Regular ever be anything other than...just plain regular? Alright, I'm of the goofy persuasion...one thing I will say, is that Regular Footer Dave Fortin is anything but regular. He is one crazy mother--shut yo mouth!

GvR Sneak Peak Hip Photo!

by: Travis | Thursday, February 21, 2008

etnies blog image

This photo was taken last night of the soon to be infamous Hip kicker for the inaugural GvR Snow event. The kicker isn't anywhere near completion and it's already giant sized. So get ready for riders going off and getting broke. What makes this hit even more exciting is that it is located literally feet from the sun deck. So everyone will have prime real-estate to see the blood flow.

I forgot to mention the run-out is looking like the craziest part of the Hip feature. So yes, you will definitely want to be here on Saturday!

What's more is Ghostface will be killin' it after the event on the sun deck and there will be mad giveaway's. So be sure to make it up.

GvR Snow Course Set-Up!

by: Travis | Thursday, February 21, 2008

etnies blog image

The GvR course, which will be on the bottom part of the “Central Park” run serviced by Chair 5, will be host to a sixty foot kicker followed up by the biggest hip ever in a snowboarding contest!

Check the Bear Mountain site to watch the hip take shape over the next few days. Be sure to check in with the live webcast on Saturday to see some amazing snowboarding going down!

Remember, if you’re in Southern California, be sure to come up to Bear where the weather’s going to be great and it’s going to dump through Friday morning so we’ll have great snow. Don’t forget, Ghostface Killah hits the stage right after the GvR Awards, so there’ll be plenty of entertainment for everyone. See you there!

GvR Practice Cancelled For Friday!

by: Travis | Wednesday, February 20, 2008

etnies blog image

Due to the current weather system, it looks like there will be no practice for GvR on Friday. It is dumping at Bear Mountain right now and the crew building the course will need some more time to make everything primo, so all the riders can go that much bigger the day of the contest. Right?

Stay tuned for updates, but plan to get plenty of sleep Friday night—it’ll be bluebird with freshies on Saturday morning! Or at least we hope so!

Riot Sheckler???

by: Alex | Friday, February 15, 2008

So, tears were flowing, hearts breaking and expletives flying (along with ghetto birds) all over Long Beach yesterday when Ryan Sheckler's V-Day Autograph Signing ended an hour early. Apparently, it started with pushing and shoving and ended with the cops. Tilly's didn't close shop early and Ryan didn't bail early. It just got outta hand so the cops stepped in and shut it down...because trampled by Sheckheads would be a bad way to go. To make it up to all you girls, it looks like Ryan's got some new signings in the area coming up soon. Check out RyanSheckler.com for more, then dry your tears and ready your sharpies....it's on.

Green Scene Tips

by: Alex | Thursday, February 14, 2008

Get into the etnies Green Scene with our everyday eco-tips. Today's tip: Eat your veggies!

eggplant penguins

It's really that simple. We don't have to be vegetarians or vegans...but it helps the planet if we just cut down on the meat we eat. On the topic of carbon emissions and global warming, we usually hear about cars and commuting as the big culprits, but they're not the biggest; cow farts are. Not cow farts alone, but cow fart methane coupled with nitrous oxide from their manure... not to mention collateral damage from the deforestation to make room for pastures, fertilizer emissions from raising feed crops, plus the energy used to run meat packing plants.

So eat your veggies and enjoy a longer, healthier life for yourself and the planet.

More Green Scene tips to come! Meanwhile, check out the rest of The SEED Project Blog.

That's right, Trestles has been saved for generations of surfers, outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers to come and etnies rallied our employees together to help fight the good cause.

February etnies Girl Of The Month

ania etnies girl of the month february

Meet Ania, February's etnies Girl Of The Month. Hailing all the way from Warsaw, Poland, Ania is a traveler, film buff, photographer and skimboarder. She's actually a whole lot of other things but after our little Q & A sesh, one thing was super clear: Ania is a very inspired artist and a total etnies girl! Read on and see for yourself.

Give us the basics: your name, age, town/city, school, grade level/year and your favorite subject.
My name is Anna Baranowska. I live in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, where I was also born. I’m in the 3rd year of gymnasium school (this means 3 years left to university here) and I’ll be 16 this April. However, I prefer saying that I’m 15. I really enjoy English as a subject as well as history, because they both let me be somehow creative.

Is art your main interest?
Actually, art is my main interest, but not the only one. I’m also very keen on film (though it’s a part of art). I love watching movies and then discussing them with the others. They give me an opportunity to see some new aspects of matters and points of view. I’m making my own short films at the moment and I’m willing to develop this passion in the future. Psychology intrigues me a lot recently, some special cases, human’s brain. But the real masterpiece is a psychological movie.

Any hidden talents?
Hmm… maybe an ability of seeing situations as photographs? I’m so used to taking pictures that my eye is gradually becoming a camera. It works as a lens. I’ll put some exposure inside and I’ll be the first living camera ;). However, if the talents are hidden, they are hidden probably also for me!

Do you like boardsports?
I’ve tried skateboarding some time ago, but I’ve left it for the pros to ride. I started skimboarding last summer and I’m really getting into it. It’s a slim board , which you throw on a shallow water while running, jump on and just skim. It’s great fun, although there are hard times at the beginning. It can be called a form of surfing and lets you feel the atmosphere of surflife.

What do you enjoy most about art?
The best thing about art is that it lets me express myself. I can show through it what I feel, what entertains, thrills or intrigues me. It’s a specific form of my thoughts that are out of my head. If you achieve your aim by art, like showing a message, it gives you an extraordinary feeling of fulfillment. What’s more involvement is crucial there. Without it, it’s not even worth trying, because if you don’t feel it, it means you should look for some different hobbies. Art has to satisfy you and it does me.

What do you like about etnies?
I love the fact that etnies supports young talents. It shows that everybody is special. This breaks some worldwide stereotypes and by being a skateboarding company, the thought gets to many people. The Seed Project is a great idea. I always support projects that help the environment or people. Sometimes you have to act to make the world better.

Why are you an etnies girl?
I am an etnies girl, because I’m creative; I try to make some unusual events out of a trivial or casual situation. I look not at the world’s surface, but deeper. I am who I am and I’m not trying to change it. There’s just no point in pretending to be someone else.

What do you do for fun?
I travel for fun, because I love discovering new places and experiencing new things. I consider even a small trip as a big journey, because you can always feel something new. Life doesn’t require sophisticated means to be interesting. Apart from art, which is my biggest pleasure, I write some scripts for short movies. I wish to film them someday.

Where do you find inspiration?
All the journeys inspire me a lot. I meet people, experience new situations, new cultural motifs and matters. Casually, what surrounds me, gives me ideas for the works. This means even a small pattern on the sidewalk, a map in the subway or simply some situations. I talk through art about some disadvantages. I also love urban architecture which I use especially for my photographs. Recently, I’ve been looking at some art deco paintings. The 1920s is a great period in every aspect for me and if I were to move back in time anywhere, I’d choose it. I was in New York last year and it gave me a great opportunity to develop my photo skills. This city is so magical. My real involvement in art started after I got back home and produced my first collage inspired by it.

What’s your biggest accomplishment?
I consider every accomplishment to be a big one. Step by step trying to reach new challenges. At this point I’m sooooo glad to be the etnies girl of the month!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten, who gave it to you, and when and why did they give it to you?
My Parents give me advice all the time and I really appreciate it, because it’s somehow the basement of my life. They are not just "do-its", but more indicators for me to use. My most valuable art advice was given to me by my teacher, who told me that you have to last in what you’re doing, because it’s the only way of achieving your aim, even if it was to happen after extremely long time.

What’s really important to you (and why)?
It’s again my Family. It’s the most important ‘thing’ in my life. Apart from it, people that can bring something valuable into my life mean much to me. Some advice, absorbing time spent together and exchange of the experiences. I rate highly some kind of "varied constancy". Hard to define, but literal.

What’s the one thing you want us to know about where you live?
My city is a specific one. It really doesn’t have a real downtown, there are many "main points" depending on which one you consider to be the centre. However, you can find there undiscovered nooks and enjoy your time there. Skyscrapers are growing really fast. I’ve had once an illusion of being in Manhattan. When I looked down, it was a big disappointment for me. The funniest thing is that I live ten minutes by subway to the Palace of Culture and Science, which can be called the "centre of the centre" and ten minutes on foot to a forest called the lungs of the capital. Firstly you can feel the man of the world and within an hour observe wildlife!

Tell us about Watermelon and Prompt Box and how you got involved?
I’ve created these two projects to get people committed in some art venture. I like organizing things to involve myself and the others in. I decided not to wait for a good moment, but to work and set them. Watermelon Project is a place for creative people, whose minds are wide open for new experience and fresh ideas. It’s meant to show that art’s an expression and a spontaneous release of ideas that are in your head. It’s an opportunity for people to share their works with the others, inspire them and make them act. Why is it called “watermelon”? Because this fruit is so multidimensional! You can cut, smell, look, knock, hold it. It’s your fruit like it’s your art. Do whatever you want with it! The aim of Prompt Box Project is to make art that has some targets and brings a message to people. Art that's created for something is positive and extraordinary and it can create an impulse of a sudden thought that can bring something new into your life. The project is meant to force artists to put a message into their work. Art can become through it a means of communication, creating a specific relationship between the artist and the receiver. Both of them are located on myspace as “watermelonproject” and “promptboxproject”. I hope that some day every artist will take part;).

You signed into etniesgirl.com as Apre. Is that a nickname and how did you get it?
Apre is my artistic nickname. I needed to sign some of my works and my full name and surname didn’t just suit in, because they consist of about 15 signs. I decided to create something and the first thing that came to my mind was an apple. It’s already connected with some things, so I turned “ll” into “r”. Here it is!

Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
"-I... You know, I'm not a good driver. I can't chase somebody in a car. I'm gonna have an accident. I'm, you know, I'll-I'll-I'll wind up hitting a school bus or something. -Look, it's nighttime. There's no school buses at night-time. -Don't tell me that. What about night schoosl?" It’s actually one of my favorite quotes from Woody Allen’s film, because it presents my personality somehow. I love irony and you have to know that you aren’t perfect. Though, there are many people who appreciate you just for being yourself to them. I try to be positive- there’s no point in worrying about small things. At myspace.com/aprerockandroll I try to put all the works I’ve done, coming back to art at the end.

    February Events!!

    by: Alex | Wednesday, February 6, 2008

What should you be excited about this month? Well, there's the fact that recent storms have been dumping enough pow to get even the biggest snow snobs to the local mountains. However, if you never seem to get enough slope time, if, let's say, you spend most of your days at a desk... in front of a computer... blogging... ahem, if you can't get to the mountain, we have plenty of rider competitions to keep you entertained wherever you are.

This weekend our girls Leanne and Marie-France Roy--yes, THE Marie-France Roy--will be in Vail, Colorado for the Honda Vail Sessions. Later, Leanne will head to our local Bear Mountain for etnies GvR Snow on Saturday, the 23rd (as will Ghostface Killah!). And finally, Leanne and Marie will meet up again in Lake Tahoe to compete in the Vans Cup February 29th-March 2nd.

Introducing 2008 SEED Project Girls Line

    by: Alex | Tuesday, February 5, 2008

The etnies SEED Project grew out of a love for the planet, a sense of shared responsibility and a belief that we (and you!) can affect change. Following the lead of parent company Sole Technology, etnies took its first steps toward a greener future with the Spring 2007 SEED Project. The inceptive line included men's apparel and footwear made of sustainable and recyclable materials that reflect our responsibility to give back to the planet.

For Spring 2008, etnies collaborated with San Diego-based artist Gary Benzel for new SEED Project line, which now also includes some stylish and eco-friendly options for us gals. Check out the new goods and learn more about SEED here.

Stay tuned to the SEED blog for more "love the planet" stuff, including everyday tips on going green.

    sally-illawarra-award

She's unstoppable! etnies Australia surfer Sally Fitzgibbons won yet another award last weekend. We're just weeks into 2008 and the World Junior Champ has already won the Ozmosis Nova Pro and Roxy Surf Festival.
We should also point out that Sally's Illawarra Sports Star Of The Year award doesn't come with the common female designation, nor that of surfer; the category pitted Sally against top athletes, both male and female, in all sports, not only surf! It's official; she's the best of the best. Read more here.
