Time Out: Summer Darling
Posted by: Alex | Thursday, August 21, 2008Ya know, sometimes... sometimes I just don't need everything to be so xtreme (no "e", just "x"). Our crew has been shredding all summer... from Maloof to US Open, Dew Tour and X Games(!)... it's easy to get caught up in all the action. The thing is, that it can be xhausting and I just don't want to be so xtreme these days. Plus, the beaches and warm weather are begging me to be lazy and pull up some sand. But alas, my awesome job entails sitting here at my desk... where I've happily started a love affair with Summer Darling. Their video for "The Open Grave" is my timeout YouTube vid of the moment. And I think it's time for a nice little mellow break... leave the xtremeness to the Flavor Collision Doritos and Flavor Blast Goldfish crackers... and GoGurt or whatever.

She was out there for her homies slash sponsors 5Boro so it was part of her job to look that good in that t-shirt. All in a day's work I suppose.

Posted by: Alex | Wednesday, August 13, 2008Great Mistake? Nina B Update!
Posted by: Alex | Tuesday, August 12, 2008What's up, Nina?
Heyo!
Congrats Tarah on her X games gold!!!!! that course looked sick!!!!!!!!! dangggg!!!!! Summer has been a blast! I've been roadtripping with some gal bike riders from Colorado the last few days all over Ohio, PA and now NYC to ride street and check out the "king of new york" comp. The contest so far has been awesome, everyone's been going off; hopefully our presence will one day inspire a "queen of ny" ha!
Here are some pictures from the trip so far:
here's me following nadia at a dirt spot in columbus. yeah girl train! ha

here's jess ausec, subbin it up at the flow skatepark in columbus, ohio

slid some old and new ledges up at the flow, i hadn't been there in almost a year so these were pretty fun

on our way out to king of ny comp, nadia steinbrecher and i met up with ray himself (ray's indoor mtb park) and co-worker bobby D for my first time downhill mountain biking sesh at 7 springs in PA. I wish we would've gotten some action shots, but man my arms are still sore from hangin on! We basically got in about 15-20 runs, taking our bikes up the ski lift, then bombing down the mountain hitting 20-30ft tables at the end..holy air time! Scary, but awesome.

then directly from there, met up with jess again and we made it to king of ny at the owls head park in brooklyn, ny the next morning where we took a few rebel runs during the "king of ny"
stoked on some hips and tall quarters again:

nadia with a fast plant

today is part 2 of the comp and still more pics to come...thanks for readin :) lets shred!
etnies Girls On Top At ESC
Posted by: Alex | Monday, August 11, 2008The European Skateboard Championships went off this past weekend... and our girls held it down for the etnies crew. Ianire Elorriaga took 1st Place with Evelien Bouilliart right behind in 2nd! Candy Jacobs for etnies Holland and Kristina Westad of etnies Norway finished off the top four in 3rd & 4th, respectively. Congrats ladies!

The contest was heaps of fun but, as you can see below, the good times didn't end on the podium...

Holly Lyons On MTV's Made!
Posted by: Alex | Sunday, August 10, 2008
Alex Mills is a brainy klutz who spent all of last year stuck at home with allergies... allergies and all the Rob & Big episodes her little heart desired. She spent her days parked in front of the boob tube, and her nights dreaming about being a skateboarder. After a less than successful solo run at it, Alex enlisted the help of MTV's Made.
Enter etnies skatestress Holly Lyons. Holly willingly left her beloved SoCal home to meet her challenge in Tipp City, Ohio. Can she teach as well as she skates? Will Alex do her justice? Tune in tomorrow, August 10th, at 1pm PST to see Holly prep her newest protege!
Surfer Polls Are Open!
Posted by: Alex | Friday, August 8, 2008It’s that time of year when we have the chance to vote for our favorite female surfers. Obviously, they are all etnies surfers, right?! Please take a moment of your lovely day and enter your top 5 nominations for female surfers in the 2008 Surfer Poll Awards!
It’s so easy to vote! Just go to SurferPoll.net. Click on “VOTE NOW” and enter in your favorite etnies surfers in the blank spaces. Here are a few friendly suggestions:
Sally Fitzgibbons – WQS 2008 Champion leading with the most points in surfing history and definite addition to the WCT tour next year! This girl has had so much success in such a short period of time, she should be at the top of the list no doubt!
Leilani Gryde – Coming back from a knee injury last season, Lei is still in the top 20 ranked surfers on the WQS tour. This girl could possibly be joining Sally on the WCT in 2009 as we wait to see how she finishes out the season.
Mary Osborne – One of our all-time favorite longboard ladies, Mary does so much for charity and surfing as a sport that she could definitely use a pat on the back!
Spencer On Transworld
Posted by: Alex | Friday, August 8, 2008Feels like SoCal's in the midst of a summer-long heat wave, but in New Zealand the toilets flush the opposite direction and it's winter right now. We had Spencer O'Brien out there last weekend, shredding the August snow for the Burton New Zealand Open... must be weird getting used to riding upside down.
More on Spencer's Slopestyle Bronze on Transworld Snowboarding.

Pro Longboard Association Tour
"Taylor Jenson and Mary Osborne took home the Ventura Classic titles in the Professional Longboard Association's second event of the season. Attendance was good, Waves small, but the competition was hot...
The Women's Division saw hometown girl Mary Osborne beat out top women's contenders Julie Cox, Kaitlin McGuire, and Wanda Smans for her first PLA victory of the season. While another first happened in the Men's Division as well, San Diego native Taylor Jenson winning the top prize in his first PLA contest of the season. Jenson, who also walked away with the K55 High Style Award for "Best Ride" of the event, beat out top surfers like Colin McPhilips (2nd), K55 event winner Kai Sallas (3rd), and Tom Lloy.
Garbriel Fimbres took home the Open Amateur Division prize."

"Cowabunga Day"
For the last six months I have been mentoring a young girl, Cecily Coco, with her Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Our goal was to take disabled children surfing from our local community. It was a huge success. Thanks to Ventura Makos and Matt Miller for their extra help!

Sally Fitz Wins WQS!
Posted by: Alex | Wednesday, August 6, 2008There's just no catching Sally Fitzgibbons. After a record-breaking season sittin' pretty atop the WQS rankings, she now officially has the WQS Women's World Championship Title... and with five events to spare! But how's that possible; isn't it a bit premature? Not when you're so far ahead in points that even if any of your closest competitors win the remaining events, you'll still win by at least 520 points! Yep, she's THAT far out of reach. That's another ASP first, as verified by ASP's Al Hunt.
Sally could sit out the rest of the season and still win... but why sit when you can surf? She intends to compete for the remainder of the season and we can't wait to see if she'll set another record for the largest winning margin!
Do it Sally!

Spencer Takes Bronze!
Posted by: Alex | Wednesday, August 6, 2008X Games 14 wasn't the only weekend action around. Infamous sent us this little update (Photos by Susie Floros):
In a progressive slopestyle final at the Burton New Zealand Open, Spencer O'Brien put together solid run after solid run to take 3rd place. Spencer was up against some tough competition from current TTR champ, Jamie Anderson, and finished just 0.67 points behind Cheryl Maas. When asked about the result, Spencer uncharacteristically had very little to say "I'm just stoked." Spencer also made a serious move in the Burton Global Open Series standings moving from number 90 to number 12 this week.
Congrats Spencer!!!

Women's Skateboarding In NY Times?
Posted by: Alex | Monday, August 4, 2008The Times, they are a changin'. Elissa Steamer took X Games Gold on Saturday, and then took time out to sit with NYTimes.com for a little insight-giving, light-shedding session. Check out the vid... which includes some montage-y cuts of Lauren, Rachel, Lorena and Evelien.
Tarah Wins X Games Gold!
Posted by: Alex | Monday, August 4, 2008Hate to say we told ya so... but we told ya so. Tarah Gieger just won the very first Women's Moto X Gold. That's right, X Games had its inaugural race for the girls ('bout time!) and it's Tarah's name going down in the history books.
That's our Tarah... holding it down! And here's a little more from Tarah.

Women's Street Skate Finals!
Posted by: Alex | Saturday, August 2, 2008Don't let yesterday's results get you down for good ol' team etnies. The skill caliber thrown down at the Women's Street Skate Finals definitely surprised a lot of people and Elissa earned that X Games Gold! Our little Rachel made 4th and the top three were Steamer, Dal Santo and Caron... not a bad trio to come in after! Girls—Lauren, Lorena, Rachel, Evie—ya done good.
Some evidence for any doubters:

- Evelien feeble grind

- Lorena ollie

- Rachel pop shuv it

- Rachel front board
And check out our girls on EXPN:
"Belgian Bombdropper"
"Lorena Lima's Take"
"Lauren Perkins: Women's Skate Contender"
Oh, and here's Lorena with a pinata after dinner... don't ask.
