etnies Girl Of The Month: Gina Romo
by: Alex | Friday, March 7, 2008

This month's etnies Girl is a rider and a writer with loads of inspiration for both. All the way from Bakersfield, say "hello" to Gina!
Give us the basics: your name, age, town/city, school, grade level/year and your favorite subject.
My name is ginA romO. I just recently turned 18. I live in Bakersfield, California. I'm a senior at Foothill High School. My favorite subject has always been English because I love to write.
You mentioned style a couple times…is fashion your main interest?
Fashion is somewhat my main interest. Everyone has there own style whether it be in the latest fashion trend or the way they present themselves, everyone is not the same. I express my style through clothes and how I present myself.

My style is based on the type of mood I'm in for that day. I'm real chill. At times I do like to get all dressed up when I'm going out. When I go skating I throw on my krew jeans, a skate shirt and some kicks, gotta have my smackers Lip Gloss. Haha. When I'm at school people would never think I enjoy skating and dirtbikes because my style is based on the latest trends and the latest magazines: Teen Vogue, Cosmo Girl, Seventeen and Style. At times I come to school with bruises on my legs and a real cute Forever 21 shirt on. Haha. My close friends knows whats up. (:
Any hidden talents?
Well I love to write; I've been writing poems and lyrics since I was in the 6th grade. Now I have about 6 composition books filled up. If I'm out and about and I think of a good quote for either a song or a poem, I grab the nearest thing to write on. Often its been napkins and post-it notes. Haha. I also love to sing. I've been in choir all throughout elementary, jr. high and honors choir in high school. When I was thirteen I had guitar lessons. I wouldn't mind picking it back up and putting those composition books to work.
Why do you like etnies?
I like etnies because they where my first pair of skate shoes so I have to represent!!! Haha.
They support young talents and it gives young chicks an opportunity to show off there talents. The SEED Project is another thing that is really interesting to me anything to make the world a better place is gnarlyyyy.
What do the words “etnies Girl” mean to you?
"etnies Girl," to me, means being bubbly, having your own thoughts and feelings. Sticking up for what you believe is right. Everyone has a voice and an etnies Girl uses that voice. There are a lot of stereotypical people in the world and being an etnies Girl proves that we are kinda breaking the boundaries—for seeing people for who they really are, not just what the outside appears to be.
Tell us about the skateboards and dirtbikes in your life. What got your started and what do you enjoy most about those?
WOW! Skateboarding I've known since I was in the 6th grade going into 7th grade summer school. My cousin Martin used to skate with my older sister, so thats how I got into it. I used to go to this church called Canyon Hills and every Friday night they would have this thing called "skatenight". It was pretty brutal; they had it all set up in the parking lot...kickers, rails, a box, halfpipe, quarterpipe. I rolled around getting in kids ways—me and my pink helmet covered with stickers...Britney Spears sticker on one side and on the other side a Mark Appleyard and a Tom Penny sticker! Eventually I progressed. My Dad bought me my first Whitesands complete; it looked like a BlackLabel. It was still prettttyy sweeet. I'd be outside on the hottest days trying to learn how to pop the deck up high enough to call it an ollie, haha. Eventually I got it down. So here I was, this 13 year old girl, rolling around with the boys, trying to find the newest skate spots, knowing we would get kicked out an hour into our session. I met most of my friends through skating. It kinda sucked for me because I was the only girl and all I had to skate with were all dudes. I mean, it would have been nice to skate with another chick to talk about boys or clothes, lol, but the guys got me more and always made me laugh. Now I kinda know girls are nothing but drama! Haha.
Now I go to this skate spot called "shindig" every Thursday Downtown. I just recently got my TTR 125 Yamaha dirtbike and I really enjoy riding. It's a rush. I plan to ride more and skating is more competitive...you're gonna get hurt no matter what. Thats just the type of sport it is. I mean, you can't buy your tricks on e-bay, haha. But for those who can't skate, it's also nice to cruse it.
What do you do for fun with your friends?
The three S's: Skate, Shows, Shoppin', LOL.
Where do you find inspiration to ride?
My inspiration to ride comes from the pros! Especially the girls. They give skateboarding a whole new meaning. Some favorite girl pros I like are Amy Caron and Vanessa Torres; both are awesome, awesome riders. My favorite guy pros are Corey Duffel, Geoff Rowley, Mark Appleyard. These boys know what skating is all about. 411 issue 54, the Foundation team is in it, and I remember I used to watch it like everyday. My mom got sooo sick of it.
As for dirtbiking, Carey Hart...he's a handsome ol' man and a sick rider furrrsuree.
What’s your biggest accomplishment, either in riding or anything else?
Biggest accomplishment is getting the courage to do something. In this case it was skating. I got hurt all the time, but I never gave up, no matter how many bruises I had or how many swollen ankles I'd get. I still stuck it out. I still remember when I landed this 5 stair at my old jr. high. Best feeling. My friends were all encouraging me to stick it so I got all pumped up and, by golly I landed that beast!!! Another great feeling was when I landed some loading dock in the back of this Food Place...it owned!! One of my friends filmed me. It was definitely a magical moment. Haha. My Mom is funny; everytime I go skating and I come back she makes me walk in front of her to see if I'm okay or walking differently because when I get hurt I never tell her.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve heard and from whom? When and why did they give it to you?
My Mom always gives advice. She knows me better than anyone ever will. She's there when I cry or just need someone to talk too about my day. I love her very much!
What’s really important to you (and why)?
Music and all the books I write in because it's all my thoughts and feelings poured onto paper...and music because it helps me get through the day. Can't forget about my family!
What’s the best or the worst thing about your hometown?
Worst thing would have to be our air. LOL. Its actually worse than LA's air. The best part is that it never snows or hardly ever any storms.
Perfeccccctttt California weather forsurrree.
What’s Stella Luminosa…where did that come from?
It means "bright star". I was just doing research and what not.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself…projects, advice, links, closing statement, anything?
All I have to say is the SEED Project is Brillant, and my best advice to whomever reads this is to have fun with what you choose to do in life. Make good decisions because the good choices you make get you far in life. Never let someone tell you what to do and how to do it. Be your own person; never follow anyone because being your own person is what makes you YOU! I'm a real friendly chicka so feel free to write me....
YES! I do have a myspace. LOL. myspace.com/starlightdr

February etnies Girl Of The Month
by: Alex | Thursday, February 7, 2008

Meet Ania, February's etnies Girl Of The Month. Hailing all the way from Warsaw, Poland, Ania is a traveler, film buff, photographer and skimboarder. She's actually a whole lot of other things but after our little Q & A sesh, one thing was super clear: Ania is a very inspired artist and a total etnies girl! Read on and see for yourself.
Give us the basics: your name, age, town/city, school, grade level/year and your favorite subject.
My name is Anna Baranowska. I live in Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, where I was also born. I’m in the 3rd year of gymnasium school (this means 3 years left to university here) and I’ll be 16 this April. However, I prefer saying that I’m 15. I really enjoy English as a subject as well as history, because they both let me be somehow creative.
Is art your main interest?
Actually, art is my main interest, but not the only one. I’m also very keen on film (though it’s a part of art). I love watching movies and then discussing them with the others. They give me an opportunity to see some new aspects of matters and points of view. I’m making my own short films at the moment and I’m willing to develop this passion in the future. Psychology intrigues me a lot recently, some special cases, human’s brain. But the real masterpiece is a psychological movie.
Any hidden talents?
Hmm… maybe an ability of seeing situations as photographs? I’m so used to taking pictures that my eye is gradually becoming a camera. It works as a lens. I’ll put some exposure inside and I’ll be the first living camera ;). However, if the talents are hidden, they are hidden probably also for me!

I’ve tried skateboarding some time ago, but I’ve left it for the pros to ride. I started skimboarding last summer and I’m really getting into it. It’s a slim board , which you throw on a shallow water while running, jump on and just skim. It’s great fun, although there are hard times at the beginning. It can be called a form of surfing and lets you feel the atmosphere of surflife.
What do you enjoy most about art?
The best thing about art is that it lets me express myself. I can show through it what I feel, what entertains, thrills or intrigues me. It’s a specific form of my thoughts that are out of my head. If you achieve your aim by art, like showing a message, it gives you an extraordinary feeling of fulfillment. What’s more involvement is crucial there. Without it, it’s not even worth trying, because if you don’t feel it, it means you should look for some different hobbies. Art has to satisfy you and it does me.
What do you like about etnies?
I love the fact that etnies supports young talents. It shows that everybody is special. This breaks some worldwide stereotypes and by being a skateboarding company, the thought gets to many people. The Seed Project is a great idea. I always support projects that help the environment or people. Sometimes you have to act to make the world better.
Why are you an etnies girl?
I am an etnies girl, because I’m creative; I try to make some unusual events out of a trivial or casual situation. I look not at the world’s surface, but deeper. I am who I am and I’m not trying to change it. There’s just no point in pretending to be someone else.
What do you do for fun?
I travel for fun, because I love discovering new places and experiencing new things. I consider even a small trip as a big journey, because you can always feel something new. Life doesn’t require sophisticated means to be interesting. Apart from art, which is my biggest pleasure, I write some scripts for short movies. I wish to film them someday.
Where do you find inspiration?
All the journeys inspire me a lot. I meet people, experience new situations, new cultural motifs and matters. Casually, what surrounds me, gives me ideas for the works. This means even a small pattern on the sidewalk, a map in the subway or simply some situations. I talk through art about some disadvantages. I also love urban architecture which I use especially for my photographs. Recently, I’ve been looking at some art deco paintings. The 1920s is a great period in every aspect for me and if I were to move back in time anywhere, I’d choose it. I was in New York last year and it gave me a great opportunity to develop my photo skills. This city is so magical. My real involvement in art started after I got back home and produced my first collage inspired by it.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
I consider every accomplishment to be a big one. Step by step trying to reach new challenges. At this point I’m sooooo glad to be the etnies girl of the month!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten, who gave it to you, and when and why did they give it to you?
My Parents give me advice all the time and I really appreciate it, because it’s somehow the basement of my life. They are not just "do-its", but more indicators for me to use. My most valuable art advice was given to me by my teacher, who told me that you have to last in what you’re doing, because it’s the only way of achieving your aim, even if it was to happen after extremely long time.
What’s really important to you (and why)?
It’s again my Family. It’s the most important ‘thing’ in my life. Apart from it, people that can bring something valuable into my life mean much to me. Some advice, absorbing time spent together and exchange of the experiences. I rate highly some kind of "varied constancy". Hard to define, but literal.
What’s the one thing you want us to know about where you live?
My city is a specific one. It really doesn’t have a real downtown, there are many "main points" depending on which one you consider to be the centre. However, you can find there undiscovered nooks and enjoy your time there. Skyscrapers are growing really fast. I’ve had once an illusion of being in Manhattan. When I looked down, it was a big disappointment for me. The funniest thing is that I live ten minutes by subway to the Palace of Culture and Science, which can be called the "centre of the centre" and ten minutes on foot to a forest called the lungs of the capital. Firstly you can feel the man of the world and within an hour observe wildlife!

I’ve created these two projects to get people committed in some art venture. I like organizing things to involve myself and the others in. I decided not to wait for a good moment, but to work and set them. Watermelon Project is a place for creative people, whose minds are wide open for new experience and fresh ideas. It’s meant to show that art’s an expression and a spontaneous release of ideas that are in your head. It’s an opportunity for people to share their works with the others, inspire them and make them act. Why is it called “watermelon”? Because this fruit is so multidimensional! You can cut, smell, look, knock, hold it. It’s your fruit like it’s your art. Do whatever you want with it! The aim of Prompt Box Project is to make art that has some targets and brings a message to people. Art that's created for something is positive and extraordinary and it can create an impulse of a sudden thought that can bring something new into your life. The project is meant to force artists to put a message into their work. Art can become through it a means of communication, creating a specific relationship between the artist and the receiver. Both of them are located on myspace as “watermelonproject” and “promptboxproject”. I hope that some day every artist will take part;).
You signed into etniesgirl.com as Apre. Is that a nickname and how did you get it?
Apre is my artistic nickname. I needed to sign some of my works and my full name and surname didn’t just suit in, because they consist of about 15 signs. I decided to create something and the first thing that came to my mind was an apple. It’s already connected with some things, so I turned “ll” into “r”. Here it is!
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
"-I... You know, I'm not a good driver. I can't chase somebody in a car. I'm gonna have an accident. I'm, you know, I'll-I'll-I'll wind up hitting a school bus or something. -Look, it's nighttime. There's no school buses at night-time. -Don't tell me that. What about night schoosl?" It’s actually one of my favorite quotes from Woody Allen’s film, because it presents my personality somehow. I love irony and you have to know that you aren’t perfect. Though, there are many people who appreciate you just for being yourself to them. I try to be positive- there’s no point in worrying about small things. At myspace.com/aprerockandroll I try to put all the works I’ve done, coming back to art at the end.

Lisa Rhymer: January's Girl Of The Month
by: Alex | Thursday, January 3, 2008

Tell us about yourself: your name, age, where you live, where you go to school, what grade you’re in and your favorite subject.
Hi, my name is Lisa Rhymer and I’m 16 years old and I also live in Aliso Viejo, Ca. I’m a junior at Aliso Niguel High School.
And your interests?
Skateboarding, friends, T.V, computer, videotaping, Ryan Sheckler and Wahoo’s
Any fun talents you’d like to share?
I’m creative, artistic and somewhat athletic.
Why’d you start skating and what do you like about it?
In October 2006, my dad showed me a clip of the Dew tour skate about this kid named Ryan Sheckler and I thought he was a fast skater and from that point, I wanted to skate. So I got a board and rode it and loved the freedom of it. To me it’s a sport that lets you become free and creative.
What do you like about etnies?
I like etnies because it’s a good company, they make great shoes, allow girl sports and it allows kids to be part of the skate industry... like GvR and the Holiday Festival. They let kids and teens see their favorite pros in GvR. In the Holiday Festival, they invite kids that aren’t that wealthy to get free shoes and watch some pros. I like how etnies has girl sports and that girls can do stuff that guys can do.
Haha, awesome. At etnies we don’t just “allow girl sports”; we love and support girls who do what they enjoy, regardless. That being said, are you an etnies girl?
I’m myself. I may be a bit self-conscious, but I tell myself to go for it. I’m creative, artistic, energetic, active and fun-spirited.
All very important! What do you do for fun?
I play outside with my neighborhood friends and skate with them, watch TV, go on the computer, play Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk's Proving Ground.
Where do you find inspiration?
I find inspiration from my friends, brother and other skaters. When I see other skaters, I just love to see that they are really good and that I could probably be at the same level as they are.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Skating again and actually trying. When I was little I did have a board but I just rode on it and did no tricks.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten, who gave it to you, and when and why?
I sometimes get advice from friends but I usually give out the advice. One [piece] of my advice is “Never let anything get in the way of what you love, it makes you lose focus on what’s next in life.” That advice is towards skaters because they tend to get really stressed out.
What’s really important to you (and why)?
My family, friends and skateboarding are really important to me. Their part of my life and they keep me focused on skating. Ryan Sheckler is also important to me too because he is a great skater and he pushes himself to where it hurts. He sets goals for himself and he goes for it even if it doesn’t work. I love how I can find people who are important to me so I can tell myself to go for it because my family and friends are supportive and watching.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
I have a lot of goals I wish to accomplish. I want to start my own skateboard company in Aliso Viejo, CA. I really want to meet Ryan Sheckler. There is one thing that bugs me, which would be the girl fans. Ever since Life of Ryan appeared, lots of girls think he’s hot and they go to competitions to see him. I feel like they shouldn’t just see Ryan as a hot guy but a great skater and a great guy. I just don’t like how there are more girls at competitions just to see Ryan Sheckler, the kid from San Clemente.

December's Girl of the Month: Lauren
by: Alex | Wednesday, December 5, 2007

December's Girl of the Month is a competitive surfer, Marketing & Fashion Merchandising major and a "down-to-earth girl who just loves life." Read on to find out why Lauren Ngan is our kind of gal.
etnies: Tell us about yourself...
Lauren: Hi! I am Lauren Ngan. I am currently nineteen years old and live in Dana Point, California. I am a freshman at Cal State Long Beach majoring in Marketing and Fashion Merchandising.
e: What are your interests?
L: Surfing, friends, photography, scrabble, sushi and Golden Spoon
e: Any talents you'd like to share?
L: I’d say I’m pretty creative and athletic.
e: How'd you get into surfing?
L: My mom was a huge influence. My mom was all into surfing before I even pursued it. She was the one who took me out on a board at Doheny and made me surf. When I first started surfing, I hated it. But she kept pushing me to surf and now it has become my life. I love her. Without her, I wouldn’t have this blessing in my life.
e: Tell us about your competitions.
L: I started competing about 3 years ago. When I was a junior in high school, I started out doing high school contests for the Dana Hills High School Surf Team and local events at San O’ and Doheny. By my senior year in high school, I was doing the WSA season all over the coast of California as well as coalition events for the Doheny Longboard Surfing Association. I was doing every contest that I was given the opportunity to do. The summer I graduated, I decided to pursue my first pro contest, which turned out to be a success. Since then, I have just been doing coalition events, local events and some pro/am events.

e: What's your favorite thing about competing?
L: I like competing because it gives me a challenge. It gives me motivation to do well and improve my surfing.
e: And what do you like about etnies ?
L: I love a company that promotes all girls sports. Girls can do just as much as any guy. Girls just have to give it a try.
e: Why are you an etnies girl?
L: I am who I am. I am probably the happiest girl you will ever meet. I’m an outgoing, down-to-earth girl who just loves life.
e: What do you do for fun?
L: I surf all the time. It’s probably my favorite pastime. I love just hanging out with my friends watching a movie and going to golden spoon.
e: What inspires you?
L: I find inspiration in people who are totally amped on surfing. You can just see it on their face how happy they are. I find it inspiring.
e: What's your biggest accomplishment so far?
L: Placing in my first pro event last summer.
e: Why do you love surfing so much?
L: Surfing is a passion to me that words cannot express. I love being able to do something independent and excel in it.

L: The best advice that I have been given was from my mom to always be humble and to respect others around you. She has told me this ever since I started surfing. If you respect others, they will respect you.
e: What’s really important to you ?
L: My family and friends are really important to me. They support me 100% in whatever I do. They are always there through the good and the bad. I love them and I am so blessed to have them in my life.
e: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?

Brianna!
by: Brink | Monday, October 29, 2007

Meet Brianna, a 13-year-old from Laguna Niguel, California, and our newest etnies Girl of the Month!
etnies Girl: Tell us about yourself...
Brianna: My name is Brianna Heath but I go by Bri. I am 13 years old. I grew up in Aliso Viejo, California, but I now live in Laguna Niguel, California. I go to Aliso Viejo Middle School, and I am in the 7th grade. I love to skateboard, though I am not very good at it!
What are your interests?
I love to skateboard above all. But I also like to do a lot of other things. Basketball, modeling, shopping, hanging out and being with my friends and family.
What are your talents?
My talents are, basketball, singing and modeling.
How did you get involved in skateboarding?
Well first my brother started to skateboard and I thought it looked pretty cool so I decided to give it a try and I loved it! Like I said I am probably not the best skateboarder though. I am also on a basketball team. I have tried to do many other things like: gymnastics, cheerleading, ballet and soccer, but they just didn't fit me. I do like to watch football, soccer, and basketball. I appreciate the lifestyle of an athlete because I know that there are many difficulties, but it is all worth it in the end.
What do you like about etnies Girl?
What I like about etnies Girl is that it gives support to all of the girl athletes across the U.S. that compete in male-dominated sports. I also love every piece of clothing and accessory in the etnies Girl line. Everything has its own style and is very unique! Every member of the etnies Girl team is awesome and should keep up the good work!
Why are you an etnies Girl?
I am the etnies Girl because I am kind, fun, energetic, quirky, confident, stylish, independent, funny, nerdy and a dork all rolled into one! I follow my dreams and don't let anyone stop me along the way. I have a big heart and I am very nice, but I stand firm for what I believe in. That is what I believe being an etnies Girl is all about!
What do you do for fun?
I do a lot of things for fun! I guess you could say I am a daredevil. Any challenge you give me I will at least try my best. I skateboard, hang out with my friends, dance to music, sing and so much more!
Where do you find inspiration?
I am very easily inspired! I get inspired for skateboarding from any pro skater and sometimes even my brother! I get inspired for life from my surroundings, like my parents, friends, scenery and sometimes just words that someone speaks.
What’s your biggest accomplishment?
My biggest accomplishment so far would have to be winning etnies Girl! This is such a big honor for me. I am very excited to have this title!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve gotten?
The best piece of advice I've gotten was from my mom. She told me to just follow my heart and not do what everyone else is doing because it seems cool. Also, to treat others the way you would want to be treated. I take this to heart because I believe that it helps me make a lot of important decisions and will help me throughout my entire life.

What’s really important to you?
My family and friends are the most important to me because I know that they will always be there for me no matter what I am going through. They will always support me and give me that extra push I may need. They are also important because I always want to make them proud of me and my accomplishments. My academic and personal goals are important to me also because I know that if I do not meet my goals and strive to accomplish them I will get nowhere in life.
Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Well I am very easy to talk to. Besides being American, I am also Indian, Swedish, French and, Irish. I am learning how to play drums and bass. I also want to learn how to speak French and Spanish. My favorite colors are black and turquoise. I really want to become a model. I have a piercing in the top of my right ear. And I love all my friends they are really awesome! <3

Lori
by: Sarah | Thursday, May 31, 2007
Lori, the current etnies Girl of the Month, has a love for motocross and enthusiasm for life that’s completely infectious. The 15-year-old is just finishing up her freshman year in high school and competes in National Amateur Motocross Hillclimbs every chance she gets. “It’s an honor to be chosen as an etnies Girl of the Month,” says the California native. “More girls can see a girl who rides a dirt bike and I can show them that motocross isn’t just a boys’ sport!” We caught up with Lori to discuss her passion for motocross, her biggest accomplishment and the best piece of advice she’s ever received.
“When I’m on my dirt bike I feel as if I’m free from everything else and that the only thing I need to worry about is how I am riding.”
etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Lori: I love motocross for sure and everything that revolves around it. My other interests include photography, sports, music, interior design, shopping, hanging out with my friends and family, my pets, fashion, demolition derbies and being outdoors.
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Lori: My talents are riding my dirt bike, playing soccer and photography.
etnies Girl: How did you get involved in motocross?
Lori: I got involved in motocross through my younger brother when I was nine years old. For his seventh birthday, my parents got him his first bike and I would ride it when he let me; I thought riding a dirt bike was so much fun. I begged my parents for a bike of my own after that, so a month after my tenth birthday they finally got me a bike and I’ve been doing it ever since!
etnies Girl: When did you start competing and how often do you compete?
Lori: I began competing in motocross hillclimbs at the age of 12. The first time I ever tried a hillclimb was in April 2004. I compete four times a year. I also do some local motocross races here and there during the year when I get a chance.
etnies Girl: What do you enjoy most about competing?
Lori: The thing that I enjoy most about competing would have to be that it is very fun and I love the competition. I also get to meet a lot of new people and I have friends from all over. The competition is the best part because everyone you go against is very good and it’s always a challenge. I love that!
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Lori: The thing that I like about etnies Girl is that they show a lot of support to every girl out there, whether they are into male-dominated sports or just being themselves. I love the clothing and shoes—they’re awesome. I love everything about etnies Girl! The whole company is great and is doing a great job showing support for us girls!
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Lori: I am an etnies Girl because I love what I do; I have a lot of heart for the things I do in life. I fight for every dream that I have and I don’t let people put me down. If I want to get something done in life I will give it all I’ve got to get it done. I’m very independent and fun loving. I'm nice, energetic, active, crazy, dorky, funny, random and much more.
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Lori: For fun I like to hang out with my friends and play with my pets. I like doing photography, usually taking pictures of my pets, different scenery and my family. I also enjoy being outdoors, watching my Dad in demolition derbies and shopping.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Lori: I find inspiration by going to motocross races and watching all the women racers who dominate the boys. I also read magazines that feature female racers who are coming up through the sport because they inspire me to want to be like them. I like watching videos of all the motocross amateurs and how hard they work to get to where they are. I usually find inspiration anywhere, as long as it gives me more confidence to want to do better and be a better person— then I am easily inspired!
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Lori: My biggest accomplishment was winning a hillclimb in April 2005. I was the only girl in my class, which was the girls 80/85cc division, to make it over the hill. Also, I won a championship for the girls 16 and under 85cc "C" division last year.
etnies Girl: Why do you love motocross so much?
Lori: I love motocross for so many reasons! I love the adrenaline rush that I get each time before I ride. I have a lot of great friends who I ride with. It’s very, very fun and when I’m on my dirt bike I feel as if I’m free from everything else and that the only thing I need to worry about is how I am riding. It’s just the best feeling when I ride! It’s hard to describe the feeling with words. All I can say is that it’s an awesome sport and I love it so much!
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Lori: The best piece of advice that I’ve ever received was from my Dad at my first race. He told me just to go out there and have fun, and not to worry about all the people watching. He said I should just to focus on what I had to do and that if I didn’t do well there would always be other races. It was my first time ever trying a hillclimb or racing, and I was nervous. His advice helped me out a lot. I actually did really well my first time out there too!
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Lori: My family and friends because they support me so much and give me the strength to go on each day. All of the support I get from them pushes me to want to accomplish my goals even more so I can make them proud! They help me out a lot and they are always there for me. My education and future goals are also very important to me because I want to live a very successful life; I don’t have a good education then I won’t be able to fulfill any of my future goals.
etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Lori: I am a very friendly person and easy to talk to. I live with my parents, younger brother and my pets. Oh, and whenever I ride I always like to have pink on, whether it’s on my gear or on my bike! I have an awesome sponsor, Team Dirty Girls Racing, who I would like to thank because they give me a lot of support and I’m glad that I am a part of the team!

If you spend much time at the etnies Skatepark in Lake Forest, chances are you’ve seen Alize, our current etnies Girl of the Month and the newest (and youngest) member of the etnies Girl flow team. What makes her immediately stand out from the crowd is her phenomenal skating coupled with the fact that she’s pint-sized and probably wearing something pink. At just seven years old, Alize is absolutely fearless and on her way to becoming one of the best female skaters out there. We chatted with her about how she got into pool skating, why she’s an etnies Girl and her biggest goal.
“When grow up, if I’m a pro skater, I’m going to try to raise money for sick kids.”
etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Alize: Mostly skateboarding and snowboarding, but I also like animals, dancing, coloring and singing a lot.
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Alize: I think I’m good at skateboarding and snowboarding.
etnies Girl: How did you get involved in skateboarding?
Alize: Well, I was snowboarding first, and my mom wanted me to keep up with snowboarding over the summer, so she got me into skateboarding and that kind of became my sport.
etnies Girl: How did you get into pool skating?
Alize: What I did is I brought my street tricks inside the bowl and just pretended that it was a street course.
etnies Girl: Does it ever scare you? You seem so fearless!
Alize: When I got my airs over the coping it sort of scared me a little bit. So I just started practicing and practicing, and I finally got comfortable with it.
etnies Girl: Do you enjoy competing?
Alize: Yeah, it’s fun. I like meeting new people and I just like the good opportunity.
etnies Girl: When did you start competing and how often do you compete?
Alize: I did my first one when I was four and it was against all boys! I compete a lot now, especially in the summer.
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Alize: I like that etnies does a lot of stuff for girls, way more than other shoe companies. It’s great because other people see about you and stuff, like with this interview.
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Alize: Because I’m myself. I learn tricks that I want to learn, not what I see everyone else is doing. I even skate in skirts!
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Alize: I like to play with make-up and dress up, I love the park, coloring, and I like hanging out with my friends a lot.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Alize: Skaters like Patrick Ryan and Curren Caples. I see them skate and it makes me want to learn.
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Alize: Learning my late grab. It took me three months of practicing everyday.
etnies Girl: Why do you love skateboarding so much?
Alize: Because you get to hang out with friends; but you’re not just hanging out when you play with them, you’re learning too.
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Alize: My family tells me just to go out there and have fun, try my best and that anybody who tries their best is a winner.
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Alize: My family and a good education.
etnies Girl: What’s one you’re your biggest goals?
Alize: Ever since I was about five, I’ve been thinking of a goal. And I thought of one. When grow up, if I’m a pro skater, I’m going to try to raise money for sick kids. My mom says that’s great and that even now I can try to do demos for sick kids. Maybe I can get my friends together and we can get $1 for each ticket and give the money to the sick kids. That’s my goal.
etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Alize: When grow up I want to be a pro skateboarder, pro snowboarder and a veterinarian. I want to get off work, show up at the skatepark, change into some skate shoes and start skateboarding!

Elizabeth
by: Sarah | Thursday, February 22, 2007
Elizabeth, the current etnies Girl of the Month, is just what we look for in etnies Girls—she’s smart, funny, a little bit cheeky and lives to skate. The 19-year-old hails from London, Ontario, Canada, and is in her second year at the University of Western Ontario. Currently studying biology, she hopes to do field research in the Arctic, as well as “travel to space to get some sweet moon crater skateboarding action.” We caught up with Elizabeth to discuss her passion for skateboarding, her biggest accomplishment and the best piece of advice she’s ever received.
“I learned I had to embarrass myself, make mistakes and fall to get better.”
etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Elizabeth: I love skateboarding and anything pertaining to skateboarding. I’m into music—I like to sing, write music, and play flute and guitar—the Internet, curling, bowling and space. My brother John directs movies and music videos, so I enjoy being part of his crew whenever the opportunity arises.
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Elizabeth: I’m good at so many things, so I should tell you the few things I can’t do—like the splits, or a backflip, or anything where you have to be acrobatic or flexible, because I can’t even touch my toes...if being flexible makes you a better skateboarder then maybe I should do more stretches. OK, so I’m a fair singer, flautist, skateboarder, curler and bowler; apparently my filming skills need work; I’m good at Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit, but I suck at Wheel of Fortune.
etnies Girl: How did you get involved in skateboarding?
Elizabeth: Well, I was influenced by my older brothers, who were influenced by “Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater,” which came out in 1999. Pretty much the whole neighborhood started skating then.
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Elizabeth: etnies Girl is the best because they gave me FREE shoes! It was perfect timing, too, because my old ones were destroyed. I like how they market toward females, not a lot of skateboarding brands do; hopefully, it’ll reel some more fems on the skate wagon, and they’ll see how much fun it is. But if not, then oh well, their loss.
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Elizabeth: I just have fun skateboarding like anybody else. Skateboarders in general in my town are gawked at, so when people shout obscenities at me while I’m skating, I don’t care—I just think it’s funny.
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Elizabeth: Anything relating to skateboarding is fun for me—I guess I’m obsessed or something? I dunno, just hanging out with my friends or family, playing “DDR,” listening to music, singing, going to shows, doing nothing, doing my homework.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Elizabeth: Watching skate videos pumps me up, especially ones featuring females because I can relate better. Reading the Bible also inspires me.
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Elizabeth: Probably giving birth to my beautiful twins…just kidding. I guess graduating high school and getting accepted to the university I wanted. Oh, and that time I tre flipped El Toro...
etnies Girl: Why do you love skateboarding so much?
Elizabeth: It’s really rewarding, and even though it can be pretty scary sometimes, I like the feeling in my stomach—I think they call them butterflies. Well, anyway, I like feeling all fluttery and buttery inside. Not only that, but it can turn a bad day into a good day, it gets the proverbial chip off of my shoulder.
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Elizabeth: It was after my first time skating at the skatepark. I felt all self-conscious at first, but then my mom told me to skate for myself and not to think about what other people were thinking. That advice helped a lot. I learned I had to embarrass myself, make mistakes and fall to get better. Later, my mom said I should quit skateboarding; I was flabbergasted!
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Elizabeth: Following my dreams, because I want to celebrate all the opportunities given to me by seizing them and bask in the reward of a fulfilling life.
etnies Girl: Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself?
Elizabeth: My sister calls me “Lizzardbreath”; I have two sisters and two brothers; and I am already behind in all my classes so I probably won’t have that much time for skateboarding this week. My brother, John, and his best friend, Daryl, aka “The Blessed Undead,” are making a really cool music video right now for a local hip-hop artist, “Exit Only.” It features a skateboard chase with Jessie Mcphee and Colin Findlater—they’re 15 and awesome at skateboarding. I recently bought the skate video, “Getting Nowhere Faster,” which features all female skaters, from West 49, and the guy working there made fun of it. My little sister just bought a kitten and she’s allergic to cats. So I guess that’s all, cats!

Tanya
by: Sarah | Tuesday, October 31, 2006
Tanya, the current etnies Girl of the Month, also has the distinction of being the grand prize winner of the Step Up to Be the Next etnies Girl contest. etnies Girl, Journeys and Seventeen flew Tanya and her friend, Amelia, to Southern California for an action-packed weekend at the annual etnies Goofy vs. Regular (GvR) Contest and etnies 20th Anniversary grand finale celebration held Oct. 20-22. The girls had a great time watching the contests (and, in Amelia’s case, competing in the etnies Girl PUSH Jam), rubbing elbows with etnies pros, attending the Beastie Boys concert, shopping for free etnies Girl gear in the Company Store and much, much more. We caught up with the 17-year-old New Jersey native about her passion for snowboarding, what inspires her and the best piece of advice she’s ever received.
“There are no limits as to what I can do to have fun while I’m strapped to my board.”
etnies Girl: What are your interests?
Tanya: I love snowboarding; it’s the best sport in the world. Aside from that, I love anything involving a board—skateboarding, longboarding, wakeboarding, etc. I also like to eat…constantly.
etnies Girl: What are your talents?
Tanya: I guess my talents are just reflected in my snowboarding and skateboarding on a good day; but aside from that, I’m not so talented. Oh, and I can make my eyes squeak!
etnies Girl: How did you get involved in snowboarding?
Tanya: Well I was 11 years old and randomly saw some video footage of Tara Dakides snowboarding. I thought she looked so awesome and from the moment my eyes met the TV I was stunned into disbelief—she was incredible at it. Ever since then, I’ve been calling Mountain Creek home in the winter.
etnies Girl: What do you like about etnies Girl?
Tanya: Not too many board sport companies have a separate collection of clothing, shoes, etc., specifically designed for female riders, but etnies Girl is just that, and more. Just by being an etnies Girl of the Month, girls like myself who are passionate about their sport, but who aren’t getting the chance to show the world their talents, can do so with etnies.
etnies Girl: Why are you an etnies Girl?
Tanya: I’m an etnies Girl because I push myself to succeed in all that I do and most of the time it pays off. I’m almost always in a positive mood, and I love to have fun—either on the mountain, with friends, skating or just hanging out, I can make a dull situation fun.
etnies Girl: What do you do for fun?
Tanya: Eating is fun, and I do a lot of that.
etnies Girl: Where do you find inspiration?
Tanya: If I made a list, it would go on forever. In snowboarding, I find my inspiration from the pro snowboarders I admire and one of my best friends, Amelia. She’s one of the best skateboarders I know and she’s always trying new, insane tricks you’d only see in “Tony Hawk’s Underground.” I find inspiration in other ways from my friends, family and boyfriend. Luckily, the people I’m always around are all really cool, and there are certain things about each of them that inspire me to be a better person.
etnies Girl: What’s your biggest accomplishment?
Tanya: There have been a few, but as of right now I personally consider it a cool accomplishment to be able to have this interview with etnies Girl.
etnies Girl: Why do you love snowboarding so much?
Tanya: I can ride at crazy speeds down the mountain, I can create my own trails through the trees, I can grind rails and hit jumps, and the satisfaction of actually landing the tricks is indescribable—basically it’s that there are no limits as to what I can do to have fun while I’m strapped to my board. Plus, the progression that snowboarding as a sport is experiencing in 2006 is insane—more people of all ages and sizes are buying boards, and more people are stomping 1080s and raising the bar even higher. Again, it’s all limitless and I love that.
etnies Girl: How does it feel to be selected as the grand prize winner of the Step Up to Be the Next etnies Girl contest?
Tanya: To be completely honest, when I found out that I won, I started jumping up and down, ran into my sister’s room like a lunatic to tell her the news and called some friends. I can’t thank etnies Girl enough.
etnies Girl: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Tanya: “Oh my God, Tanya, just do it already! Everybody’s waiting.” My sister said this to me, and while it doesn’t seem like the best piece of advice to get, it really was. She was telling me to hit a rail, frontside it and stop making everyone wait. (I was stalling in front of it, about to chicken out.) Well, to make her shut up, I hit the rail and landed my trick, and we just took the chair up to the terrain park again and again. I realized that I should just try something new if I have a strong feeling that I’m ready for it. If I just wait and hold back I may never progress, and that’s no fun.
etnies Girl: What’s really important to you?
Tanya: My entire family is important to me because I love them, we help each other out and we’re there to support each other at any given time. My friends are important to me because they’re the best friends a girl could find and they’re always there for me when I need them. (Love you guys!) And my boyfriend, Charlie, means so much because I love him like crazy and we have so much fun together. Other things that are important to me: snow days, my driver’s license, my phone and sherbet.
