Sally Fitzgibbons
SURF
Sally has played and loved a wide variety of competitive sports. She started surfing the age of 7 and has loved it ever since. She is a member the Illawarra Academy and NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) via lectures under the Individual Athlete Program and Emerging Athlete’s programs and has also attended the High Performance Centre at Casuarina (Surfing Australia HQ) for Surfing.
Coaches Todd Prestage and Martin Dunn can attest to the fact that surfing is Sally's favorite sport, but all the sports she has competed in have offered different challenges. She represented the State of NSW on 14 occasions in the last 3 years in Touch Football, Athletics, Soccer, Surfing and Cross Country running. She has traveled overseas following her sporting interests; in 2003 she traveled to China for soccer and ran a section of the Great Wall; in 2006 she represented Australia at the ISA World Junior Surfing Titles in Brazil and took her first trip to Hawaii not long after. In 2007 she traveled to Portugal for the ISA World Championships and to the Mentawai’s for a boat trip.
In 2006 she finished Year 10 as Dux of Kiama High School and is currently doing Year 11 subjects by correspondence to accomodate her travel schedule. She was also part of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Kiama High School for the past 4 years.
Her role models include Kelly Slater, Lisa Anderson, Mick fanning, Steph Gilmore and Craig Motrem. She admires their achievements and hopes to one day compete on the World Championship Tour.
In 2005 she had her first significant surfing results and was the youngest surfer-- male or female--to win an ASP Pro Junior (Under 21’s) event and also made the final of the WQS (World Qualifying Series) Billabong Easter Festival finishing second to Rebecca Woods. She has since won a number of Pro Junior events and is the current Australasian Pro Junior Champion, ISA World U18 Champion and the ASP World U21 Pro Junior Champion. Sally would like to add, “Live your Dreams.”
